BTW, one of the things I did last year which know one seems to do is clean the evaporator in car -big difference as it too gets clogged with dirt, etc -my system is much more efficient now. On my '82 SD, I had to remove a cover and pull fan inside of car. I was then able to reach up and put my hand inside of evaporator housing and was able to feel crud, etc by running fingers along bottom of unit. I then made a right angle attachment on a garden sprayer and sprayed hot water along fins (make sure your drain, drains!) Then I sprayed condensor coil foaming cleaner (found at Home Depot-good for cars/home HVAC systems) and sprayed on fins, rinsed, repeated, etc. I was able to put a mirror I had up in to housing at an angle to survey my work -much cleaner and and system air smelled fresher too. Imagine what kind of dirt collects after 28 years!

From the BG website...

I drove to Dallas last August and picked up an 8 oz bottle of FrigiQuiet. The bottle lists compatable oils but for R12 "Should only be used as a topping off oil" was the wording on the label. I donated the bottle to my indy and just called to confirm as he still has the bottle. I also called and asked to speak to a tech at BG about the use of R-12 with neat FrigiQuiet. Salesman says OK, BG tech says OK with other refrigerants but not R12. The molecular cap on the FrigiQuiet oil "could be broken down" by R12. Both of us are chemists and we got into the chemical details of cap stability. I used 2 oz with mineral oil to provide a quieting action and dye in the system. If I hadn't purchased the bottle, I'd have used neat mineral oil.

Well that is informative information. I wonder why my 2 oz bottles didn't say that. Anyways it's been a few years, I am happy I got this far with a remanufactured compressor with all the horror stories of them not lasting long.

A 2 oz bottle would have been packaged for "topping off" or quieting and that seems to be allowed for all refrigerants.

What's wrong with using the correct oil the system was designed with?

I've seen them last 20+ years with the correct mineral oil.
