Who has had good results with what kind of glue for the hood pad?It gets really hot here.Gray and dark blue hoods you could probably fry eggs on when parked in the sun.I hope to only do the job one time! Don

can I assume you mean "remove as much of the old adhesive as possible?"

Any recommendation how best to do this? The adhesive is HD after all.

I have to perform pad install on our W124 and W126.

A good 2" metal putty knife works good.

Some other good tips:
Cover your windshield!! there is a natural air flow when applying adhesive, an old blanket works well for the engine and fenders.
Before you apply adhesive to new hood pad and hood, do a test fit so you have a good
plan. Understand how the pad fits. This stuff sticks on contact
I used a 3" paint roller to apply pressure to the entire pad after it was mated.

3M 8090 is a good product as well

3M Super Trim Adhesive (8090)

Use the 3M Super Trim Adhesive (8090) specified for hood pads and is a automotive product.

My original hoodpad became unglued along the entire top left side. I re-glued it with 3M Super Trim Adhesive and it has held strong for 2 years so far....

The problem with NOT removing the old stuff is that the old adhesive can let go of the surface (hood in this case) even while it is stuck to the new adhesive which is in turn stuck to the hood pad.

Be careful not to remove the underlying paint when scraping off old hood pad glue. Bare steel will rust due to moisture trapped in the new hood pad over a period of years. Once you have the old glue removed, clean the surface thoroughly with 409 or whatever cleaner you like, to remove dirt and oil. The new adhesive will stick better on a clean surface. As in many jobs, preparation is 90% of the work.

New (to you) Hood Pad

Two Items an Absolute must for a SUCCESSFUL application,
IF, you live South of the Arctic Circle.

1.3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (Part # 08984) (Get the 1 Quart can)
(As always be Very careful when using Solvents[Read the Directions and Cautions on the Container] )
2.3M Super Trim Adhesive (Part # 08090) ----- NO,NOT the "77"
[Exceptional Bond Strength]
[Heat and Moisture Resistant]
[Bonds heavyweight Automotive Materials]

Pictures Below

I found best results by covering under-hood areas, with a great big tarp, and using the Shop Vacuum to remove the old Hood Pad Material.
(WEAR AN APPROPRIATE FILTER MASK!)
Then all that's left are small areas of the old adhesive, which can be removed
using rags (Inexpensive, "Throw Away") treated with the 3M #08984.
(I'm not gonna suggest using a cheap Hand Spray Bottle from HD labeled ZEP...Nod,Nod Wink,Wink.)
You'd be well advised to prosecute the Chemical removal of the Adhesive
OUT-OF-DOORS !
(Safety Obsessive as I am,I wear Goggles and a Filter Mask,One of Those Cheap Plexi-glass "Flip Down" full face shields and a Tyvek suit with a Set of Chemical Proof Gloves.)
You'll not want the VOC s in Your: Eyes,Lungs or on your Skin.
[Please note the final line of the Warning on the #08984: "Central Nervous System Depression" ,which is IndustrySpeak for DEATH.]
Then move the Chassis indoors.
(Garage, if possible for Application of the "New to You" Hood Pad)

MAKE SURE THE APPLICATION AREA IS SUPER WELL VENTILATED!!!
NO SPARK OR FLAME POSSIBILITY !!!
3M # 08090 uses DIMETHYL ETHER as a PROPELLANT!

The 3M super 77 works best. I used two cans to glue mine on 6 years ago and it is still on there!

If it worked that good, you wouldn't need two cans!!! I used one can of 3M 8090 six years ago and my pad is still hanging on tight. And it gets a bit warm where I live.
