? 1992 300D

When my car sits over night or over the weekend when you start it, it stumbles a few times and lets out some white smoke eveytime it stumbles. What is the problem? It has 240,000 miles on it, after it does it a few times it stops and runs great. Please dont say headgasket.

The smoke might be due to worn valve guides and/or seals. Over a weekend, enough oil might ooze into one or more combustion chambers to cause the smoke you are seeing.

Does the glow plug light come on in the glow key position? if it comes on after the engine is running that is an indication that you have at least one bad glow plug. One bad one will cause some smoke on a cold start and a little rough running at first. I think a bad head gasket would cause more symptoms than that. Don

Glow plug light works as it should, when you first turn the key. Light goes out, start car.

Could be the beginning of the end of your Gead Hasket.

Could be a clogged or weak injector. I've seen several OM60X's put out a few puffs at start-up, then run beautifully.

One bad GP #2-5 will not return a glow-plug light error. You could have one bad.

Really? That's interesting. I thought if any one was bad the light would do something.

On the 602/603, if #1 is bad, no glow-plug light. If 2-5(6) has one bad, no indication, but if two are bad 2-5(6), glow plug light out (all in the glovebox manual).

I'm looking at the manual for the 1992 300D but do not see anything to this effect. Are you able to point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Egg on my face. I looked through the manual for my '87, no joy. I'm guessing that I read it in the FSM then, but now I'm not sure.

In the FSM, I found this:

"It is possible that the indicator lamp does not indicate a fault (because of unfavourable tolerances) until 2 glow plugs in cylinders 2-5 have failed."

http://www.ps2cho.net/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/15-4000.pdf

So it sounds like, with one bad in 2-5, the indicator may or may not indicate a fault.
