W210 Headlamp Revival

Hey all,

Following the encouragement from the guys at the Nor Cal drive, I've gone ahead and refinished the headlamps on my E300. If the lacquer on your headlamps is fading or worn off, take note: oven cleaner DOES NOT work, and the Meguiar's headlamp cleaning kit DOES NOT work.

The $10 solution to a $260 problem:
1. Sand off yellowing / fading lacquer using an orbital sander and fine sandpaper
2. Wet sand bare polycarbonate lenses w/ 1000 - 1500 - 2000 grit sandpaper
3. Spray a few coats of Rustoleum clear lacquer. Let dry 24 hours.

Pictures show bare polycarbonate and lacquer-finished lenses. The results are night and day.

Get back to us after a year or so. I want to see how the lacquer holds up.

I used a kit put out by 3M, and it worked like a charm. Contains everything you need, and takes very little time to get the lenses back in shape. It sells anywhere from $14-$20 depending on where you make your purchase. I got mine from Amazon.

I used the same kit on my '96 E300D, worked great.
