who's bright idea to cram 6cyl into 124 chasis?

WOW it's a pain to get the radiator out of the 87 wagon. a 2 piece shroud would make things a tad simpler...
I'm gonna replace EVERYTHING that may require removal of this thing again!
can you'se guys with experience with this vehicle make suggestions?
I wanna finish this, close the hood and not open it aside from oil/fuel filter changes... JEEEZE!

I've got the radiator down to pit speed. The shroud is two piece. You twist the ring to the left, lay the shroud ring over the fan. Then the shroud pulls up and out. Remove the two trans cooler lines. There is a 10mm bolt on the drivers side on the top and bottom of the core holding the trans cooler lines down. Flat bladed screw driver pulls the hold down tabs out. The top hose is cake, the bottom hose is a bit harder, but not that bad.

Pull up and out.

I use a friend to re-install to hit the bottom mounting tabs on the first try.

Inspect your fan when you have the rad out, my fan was cracked and it was spinning off center and it was going through the filters.

I think it was Sixto who told me that the two-piece fan shroud is from a later model W124. The '87s had a one-piece shroud that makes removal a pit, you have to remove shroud and fan together. Maybe John could find a two-piece shroud in a junkyard. I have one in my '87, added by a PO, makes work in front so much easier.

I'll post pics of my shroud. it's one piece. and it's pretty chewed up. I may slap in the shroud from the 93 I have.
even with a 2 piece, I bet it's hard. the cooler lines, the lower connector hits things, the air filter hose is in the way. wow. it's just SOOOOO cramped in there.
what size is the tensioner bolt? 12mm? mines gunky... I'm putting in the fan and clutch from my 93 WAAAY better condition, and it's plastic, might get a tad better RPM's out of it.
the VP from the 93 had the allen bolts on the cover, so it's newer than my original in the 87, but it has open bearings... still better than the 87's hard to swallow 400.00 for a new one... then again, SO MUCH DIFFICULTY GETTING TO EVERYTHING...

I believe that the '91 300E has the 2-piece, not sure however what year/model started them nor which it fits based on plumbing outlets.

Nice feature, I'm watching for one to put on my '87.

'sgot two 'lectric fans innit ? I run Evans coolant and regular thermostat.
The leccy fans do just fine. Goes to 200 when idling, but fans bring it back to 185c.

A/C works good too. Cold air hurts my knuckles after 10 miles and I have to block off the Screen vents to stop the condensation forming.

nope, the 87 only has one 16" fan.
mine running with the fan clutch bad, but the aux fan locked on high keeps the temps down ok.
I don't think I'll do it in 100F temps with the a/c on though...

It is a 124.

The 124 turbodiesel 6-cylinder got one large fan, the 124 diesel 5-cylinder has the two small fans. Go figure.

I do have a parts car 93 with two fans... which would have more airflow? I like the redundancy of twin fans! it's on my upgrade list for the car before I start driving it daily!
