1987 300TDT Rear Suspension issue/diagnosis

185,000 miles, engine is great. My wagon has been riding poorly since I got it. I have been replacing rubber bits at a time working on getting it back to how it should be. My main symptoms are sound related as apposed to ride related. If on a flat road, it does fine. If I ride on a road with a lot of small, focused bumps I get a low resonating sound. Almost like a subwoofer (but my system is off). Also, if I am cruising at say 40 mph and turn steering wheel left to right quickly, it seems to roll a lot more than my friends 1995 E320, which I service and drive regularly. In my head I have blamed subframe bushing as they are the only rubber I have not replaced back there. However they visually look okay. So I am thinking maybe it is the SLS Shocks and/or Springs.

Here is what I have done:

- Front Shocks (Bilstien HDs)
- Rear Differential bushing (both pancakes and the ones at the subframe)
- All multi link compontents
- Rear swaybar bushings
- Accumulators

My SLS system works. I replaced accumulators and serviced with OEM Hydro fluid. SLS does not leak. A while back, while troubleshooting this I removed the adjustment link and the SLS valve worked and actuated the system like it should. It was riding a bit low so I got it up to where it should be. Which made me think that it may have put too much weight on the springs, wearing them out.

What do you thinks? Shocks? Springs? Got a diagnostic procedure I should follow?

The subwoofer sound, ... I'm a bit fuzzy on what that would sound like. Could be subframe bushings through. Check the exhaust mounts also.

As far as having more body roll than your friend's '95 E320? I've got both a '95 E320, and an '87 "300TDT", and there is a lot of difference. One difference is the higher center of mass in the wagon, much of it over the rear axle. Ironically the '87 wagon has a 27mm front sway-bar and the '95 only a 20mm (thiis from memory), the '95 should have more roll but that's another item probably to offset the roll-coupling issues and prevent oversteer with a full-load in the car and SLS pressurized at its max, ... a big front bar causes understeer which is what the wagon has empty. Anyway (I digress), the wagon has a higher center of mass and also has different front steering & suspension geometry, and a slightly wider track, and possibly higher rate springs. The wider track is at least partly due to the 10mm change in combined wheel offset.

My '87 with 16x8" ET34 wheels on the other hand, corners acceptably in comparison to the '95 with stock wheels/tires. I would like to reduce steering effort like the '95, but other than that it's no autocross car.

A low resonating sound is what it sounds like...help?

I found this recently and was thinking maybe something like this would help?

As I said, the ride seems ok, it is just loud and annoying to ride in.
