Gotta problem in process-81 AC belt removal

Hey, all, I'm out under the car today, and I've run into a problem after changing out the water pump. I bought a new alternator belt and ac compressor belt to get rid of two old looking ones. Alternator was easy, since the fan pulley let it go on removal. I had to fight the steering pump a little, but it has probably been there awhile. My problem is, I can't get the AC compressor to budge. I've loosened both bolts, then banged on it a couple of times with a ball peen. No luck. I then unloosened the hose brackets attached to it) not the one over the two hoses, but roger on the bracket nut\bolt. Anyway, I can't get the thing to budge. It is an AC Delco, so it's not the original, and I can see the swing bracket has plenty of play to move (about an inch +), so what in the heck am I doing wrong? I got my sleever bar out of my IW toolbucket and pried, but only succeeded in seeing the whole engine move back and forth. What am I doing wrong?

3 19mm bolts on the back of the compressor, and a cable attached to an adjuster bolt on top of the compressor mount...

Question HELP

3 bolts on back??? The manual and a DIY said there were only 2! I loosened the bolt for the sliding adjustment, and the 'main' bolt, toward the fender. Just found this morning that there is a 10mm tension bolt on the top somewhere that I didn't know about (haven't gotten back out there to try it yet) But where the heck is the 3rd bolt at?? Anybody got a picture or a detailed description? (Detailed as in "How to find it for Dummies?") HELP!

I looked at my compressor 2 days ago and didn't really see how to get it off... doesn't help that it's covered in oil. I am in the same boat as you, can't really find any info here. I am going out now to try to figure it out.. I would hate to replace all these A/C parts and flush it all out without replacing the compressor too. I even took the evap out and cleaned in with simple green

the a/c and oil cooler lines are really what stop it from moving.

it moves just like any other adjustable accessory.

When you pull the compresor, make note of which spacers go where as they fall off when you remove the bolts.I think there are 4 spacers. 1 long one on bolt #8 and 3 other short ones of different lengths. What's with all the spacers anyway. Seems like the AC was an afterthought after the engine was designed.

Got it!

Ok, after hearing what the experts had to say (your name here), I actually went back and looked at the DIY article from the resource header up there and printed it out, and low and behold it did say three bolts, and told about the tension bolt. (even though the picture had arrows, there's only one actually showing, but the third one wasn't hard to find. They all have 19mm heads. The tension bolt is a 10mm deepwell. I didn't have to take the bolts all the way out to get it, but I probably could have damaged something the way I was prying and rocking it (and wacking it with my hammer. If it works now, I'll be amazed. The DIY also had a great tip for getting the belts back on that I'd never tried before. Hanging it on the cam pulley and hitting the starter for a split second. Worked like a charm. On the alternator belt, I just put it on the fan pulley, then forced it (the pulley) up onto the guide shaft. I'd advise getting your bolt holes lined up first. I had to redo it about three times before I got them in line. It would have been a piece of cake had I realized that I needed to put the shroud in before the fan. (DOH!) It's a little harder that way, but I had some practice runs when everything was out of the way. Anyway, the new water pump is on, the belts are changed, a quarter inch of grease and dirt have been cleaned off everything I could get to, and I even got my fuel filters, air filter and oil filter changed. Drained the oil, and remembered I have new oil pan gasket to put on. I got every bolt out but one. But that's another thread. Anyway, I want to thank everybody who gove me advice on this project. I think I spent as much time coming back in to ask questions and check for replies as I did working on the car. Thanks very much to all of you. I really don't think I could have done it without this forum. (The diesel forum) Much obliged! Lee
