Service Manual for 74 240D
I recently went out to the Mercedes Benz website and bought a service manual for the 115 body styles, which includes the 74 240D. I recieved the CD and it doesn't work. It looks like it is trying to go out to some web site and it cannot find it.
I work during MB office hours and I really don't want to spend the 1/2 hour+ to try to get hold of someone. Does anyone have a hard copy service manual or know how to fix my CD? I'm trying to figure out how to do the following: 1. Replace the rheostat for the dash board lighting 2. Fix the loose cover glass over the speedometer. Some one pushed the glass in and the circular bezel behind the glass is also loose. This produces the annoying buzz known to man. 3. Fix the parking brake micro switch. I'm trying to determine where the switch is and how I should fix it. The idiot light is remaining on and I find this pretty annoying. Please reply and thanks. Dave |

I don't know why your CD does that, I would imagine it should work without an internet connection at all.
Until you can get that figured out, you can get some of the applicable or similar information at http://handbook.w116.org/ - this is for the W116 (i.e. 300SD) chassis though a lot of the info is similar or the same for other models. The rheostat can be removed and restored, and you can search for information on this (peachparts) board to find out how to do it. IMHO it really worth the effort to fix - after messing around with mine for a while, I removed it and soldered a jumper wire across the terminals. I prefer the dash lights to be as bright as possible, anyway, and they aren't very... The loose cover glass on the speedometer - I had this problem, and some previous owner siliconed the glass to fix it, but when that failed, just stuffed some wads of paper in between, to stop it from rattling! I re-siliconed it, but it looked terrible. When you remove the instruments from the cluster you will find the glass is held in by plastic "tabs." Mine were all broken off (no surprise!) You could glue something in to hold the glass in, but it's probably better to locate a good cluster from a pick n' pull place. I was fortunate someone was parting out a 220d and I bought a good cluster face and just reused my instruments. It looks SO much nicer and it has the chrome trim rings which were missing from my original cluster. I have no idea where the parking brake warning light switch is...sorry.
