1984 300cd what would you pay for it?

What would one consider as a good deal on this car if they would consider it at all?

"With a baby on the way, we are thinking it is time to sell out and get another more realistic family car.

This 1984 Mercedes 300cd Turbo Diesel has a lot of character. She is not perfect by any means, but has some great bones and potential. We have owned it for roughly a year, just as a 2nd car for errands and such. She is cheap to fix, will run all month on biodiesel or regular diesel before we fill it up.

Here are some positives:
Not many CD's are around, so she is sort of special around these parts.
The front brakes, rotors, and calipers are replaced within the last month.
The tires, wheels, and hubcaps are replaced as well.
The battery is new within the last few months.
It passes inspection!
Cd Player, Power Windows, Heater, all work.
The fuel lines (some) and pump were replaced.
She is a tank, cruises right along, steers straight.
She is a good veggie candidate . We run bio or regular diesel however.

Character Issues:
The interior is worn, but by no means unusable. We use seat covers.
The sunroof does not work, but there is another motor for it, we just never hooked it up. We bought it that way.
Air? Never tried, but doubtful.
Window rubbers are not perfect.
Dings, scratches, but no significant rust for the most part. She has character like I said. Some stickers are on the deck-lid from previous owner.
Once in awhile, the transmission acts funny. But always corrects itself once she is warm. This has been acting up more frequently, I believe it is the booster, vaccuum or valve on these things that cause the problem.
I am actually not sure if the odometer works. I am sure it doesn't so actual mileage remains a mystery. (260,000+)
The front window has a small hairline crack on the passenger side but doesn't affect vision, or drive in anyway. Nor does it leak. It is towards the bottom of the windshield.
I'm sure there may be a few things I missed, but I will do my best to answer your questions.

Old Betty needs a new home. I will answer any questions you may have. She is currently licensed, clear title, and driven daily. Use her for a back up car, daily driver, but i do encourage you to remember that it will need a bit of TLC once and awhile. As far as price, we are willing to talk. Concerning trades, may be open depending on what you have. For example, may be interested in motorcycles (no sport bikes), a built shed or deck, a small pickup, etc. Doesn't hurt to ask right. Could possibly offer cash with the trade as well. Feel free to ask whatever you wish.Price is workable, but please refrain from offering a low bid. Check kbb for the value, you will see the price reflects fairness. Scams, wiring money, and all that jazz will be denied. Thank you for your time and patience.

There are several examples of this car on Ebay if you would like to see what a possible restored one would collect. That was our vision until we realized we have a rugrat on the way. Reasonable offers are accepted. Thank you!"

TMU scares me on a diesel. As do torn up interiors. Bluetypewriter is on the money IMO.

if looking for a cd, that one looks pretty good.
make an offer if you are looking, if not don't. around here, that would be about a 2500.00 car. very few turbo CD's around.

TMU - True Mileage Unknown.

If the odometer stops rolling, its TMU. His best guess probably isn't good enough.

I would look at what a car in this general condition would sell for with the major issues fixed:
  1. A/C
  2. Sunroof
  3. Windshield
. . . subtract these items and see what you come up with. My guess is that it will be lower than what the seller is looking for. I get the impression that he has put some money into it and would like to get it back. He also seems emotionally attached. The fact that it is a CD adds some premium value to the selling price. The mileage being an unknown is a negative, as well as the interior. I would also get under the car and see what rust issues there are to the frame, jack points and general underbody. The general rust condition would be the biggest factor to me. All of the other stuff can be replaced if broken.

Also, how is the dash? Cracked? That is a big negative if cracked, as you can't just buy a dash at the parts store.

Same thing in Socal, not many CD's so $2500 would be a deal.

I wouldn't pay too much either, it sounds like this car is going to need several $1000 worth of work to make it right. If you pay $2-3000, you will probably need to spend another $2-3000 to get it straigtened out; that will give you a decent car for about $5-6000. As an alternative, just find a nice one for that price.

Found this one on Craigslist here in the SF Bay Area. If I had the spare cash I would consider it.

I see it has a salvage title and it has the rear trim underneath the tail lights from a lower level W123 like a 240D. A 300CD should have the chrome trim. In fact, I think all coupes had the chrome trim.
