Can you spot the missing part(s) of the vacuum system?
 

Hi there all... i am new here and new to the world of Mercedes as well. I was recently given a Mercedes 300D (gotta get the vin for additional info). The car runs alright but has some vacuum issues. The previous owner doesn't know who pulled parts off the vacuum system because it was given to him and sat in his yard as is. I have NO experience with a vacuum system and would like to replace the missing parts.

Some of the hoses from the vacuum system are plugged off and clearly something is missing. I have pictures i can share if anyone has the time and experience and wouldn't mind playing "spot the missing parts" with me.

The engine won't currently turn off unless you pop the hood and hit the choke.

If you do a search over in that forum, you might even find a vacuum diagram.

What year is your 300D?

Remove the red x line = it is an open atmospheric vent.

post your VIN# for more vacuum routing data.

more engine compartment pictures would be nice.

You may be able to find a vacuum diagram via a sticky.
I'm not familiar with a system that old, so I'll just give what I think.
It appears the car's systems are not getting any vac, as the one nipple coming from the main vac line, that big one in the foreground, is plugged off, or so it seems.
The brown line coming from below the round metal object should not be there, that nipple is open to the atmosphere.
The main line plugged off should be plugged into one of those openings with the four way connector, the other orifice should have that brown line going to it.
I'll bet the door locks leak to the point of not letting the car shut off with the key.

Both pictures show you are correct. :)

Is there any special way to disconnect that brown one? do i disconnect the thicker black hose part or leave that and disconnect the brown line part only?

i apologize if i seem like i am asking dumb questions. I am the first one to admit i don't really know what i am doing, but the best way to learn is to ask questions and then get in there and get your hands dirty. :)

That is a chassis#, not the VIN#

i just went out and triple checked... it says right on the car inside the door and on all of the paper work: VIN: 123.130 and goes on from there. No letters. I am in Canada... perhaps our VINs are different?

is it possible that someone disconnected the vacuum for this very reason? i am having a hard time finding vacuum schematics for the 300D for 1978.

really, i don't care terribly about the vacuum issues unless that is what's affecting the ability to turn off the engine. i have read that this can be a common problem.

As mentioned, the 123.130 is the model number, your vin should be on the same plate on the door sill, but being a Canada car, maybe not. Try the windshield pillar, but it will be on the title.
Simply pull the rubber part off the metal nipple and the brown line, insert to one of the openings as drawn.
Usually the door lock system leaks and the shut off actuator can't get enough vacuum to shut off the engine with the key. Many have left the the door lock system unhooked. The color of the vac lines going to the doors is yellow with a red stripe, unplug the rubber connector there and plug off the rubber connector. You may want to get new connectors, they're cheap.
