82 240D Shifting Late

I just got my diesel, and one of the only issues that's really mechanical and not just a cosmetic thing is the transmission. It is shifting late. If I pull of the accelerator slightly and let the idle slow a it, it will shift, but if I just keep the pedal down, it will go further than it sounds like it should, then kind of jump into gear. I've just done a small amount of internet poking around, and one person on another non-auto forum said something about a cable of some sort that controls when it would shift. BUT, I'm not sure if that's on my model, or earlier or what. Any help, or just pointing me in the right direction, would be appreciated. Thanks. James.

I believe 82's have a Bowden cable (wire). Turn the white nut in, clockwise when standing on the passenger side, to shorten the amount of time it spends in each gear.
Previous years have a different set up.

DO adjust throttle linkage

I have an '81 240d.
It had the same symptoms, needed a new modulator. Same part # as an '82

Modulators can be adjusted, can't they? Along with vacuum?

Later model modulators, at least, can be adjusted via vacuum. That controls how hard a shift, the Bowden cable (wire) or control pressure rod on early models, controls how long each gear is in play.

It would be helpful to know what gear shifts late.

It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

Thanks gentlemen. A buddy and I printed a copy of the vacuum diagram and looked at it a bit yesterday. Looks like one hose going into the black plastic harness (idk what else you would call it) was switched with a different one. Put them back and it shifts better, albeit a bit early maybe. Slips a bit from 2nd to 3rd, but shifts much better.
