1982 300SD Temp Needle Up and Down; what is normal Range needle should move??

Hello,

I'm not sure if my car is normal or not.

I've got 50/50 in it, it has never boiled over.

Temperature outside yesterday was mid 90's and I drove it Hwy 70 MPH and also Hot Dogging through a few towns with traffic lites with AC on.

At 70 MPH it ran like 110 degrees C

When I ran 75 MPH it creeped up to 118C so I backed off till it went back to 105c.

When hot dogging it through a few towns it ran between 100 and 110.

Aren't the needles supposed to be fixxed at one point?

I'm thinking something is wrong.

Do any of yours temperature "stay-put" under the above conditions of driving?

The water pump looks replaced and the radiator has the crimped on end caps so I think not original. I changed the fan clutch 20K ago.

Miles overall on car 165K.

Thanks!

Mine stays at 87 degrees C ounce it is warmed up. I have only had up to 65 mph lately and stays at 87 while moving and when I pull off the Freeway and have to stop it will rise above 90C but less than 100C but settles back to 87C.

It might be a good idea to check that actual Coolant Temp with a Thermometer. I have a Digital one but used to use Meat or Candy thermometers.
If you cannot actually put the probe into the Coolant you can take the probe; lay it against the Hot side Radiator Hose put some insulating Foam over it and Duct Tape it down. That holds the Heat in so you can get a reading.

I also have one of those Infared ones but compared to a real Thermometer it reads 5 degrees cooler so I do not think it is as accurate as a Thermometer.

I'll get something to measure if needle is off.

I guess these thermostats are what is called Proportional Control. They open so much for so much off from setpoint. You would expect the temperature to keep creeping up as load increases.

I was wondering if anybody ever used a balanced thermostat and if they are available.

From what I read they react faster to changes.

I bought a volt/ ohm/ temp meter from field piece (HVAC industry ) it has a thermocouple.
It showed my gauge was reading 3-4 degrees hotter than the head temp by the sensor. My gauge will also bounce around but it usually stays under 100*c . When it settles down it runs right above 80*c regardless of outside temp or driving .

Check your ground on your dash. My 240D would show above 100*c but when you pushed the dash it would go down to 80* . Also check your connection at your temp sensor.
