With the valve cover off, I was able to get at the injectors with a wrench. The first injector was encrusted with carbon, the nozzle was seized in the body and entirely black. A thick ring of carbon fell out of the space around the nozzle.

I checked the second injector, it looked good but I cleaned it anyway. When I put everything back together again, the engine slightly better but still pretty sorry. I'm going to pull all of the injectors and soak them over the weekend.

Can i get away with just cleaning them, or should I go ahead and replace the nozzles?
Hi
You wont know what you have without pop testing and observing spray pattern. You can build your own pop tester using a bottle jack or hand hydraulic pump for about $75. An injector shop will charge about $10 each to test them plus extra for cleaning and balancing. If you're going to use a shop, it may be best to buy new nozzles and let them do the job. Get a price up front.

Thanks for the links! I've been reading through the threads but still can't find exactly what i'm looking for.

I went ahead and ordered the new nozzles. Do I still need to have these pop tested and adjusted by a shop? The dieselgiant DIY makes no mention of it.

Thanks!

You could call your local Fuel Injection Shop and ask them what they do when the rebuild Injectors.
Compare that to the Diesel Giant write up and you will have your answer.

I do not agree with his lapping method. In a shop they use a Lapping Plate that is entirely flat.
