Pretty sure you just crank it. The owners manual should have this information if you've got one; it'll have something about how to bleed it. My 86 is self-bleeding after a filter change, you just crank for up to 60 seconds with your foot on the floor until it starts. I would be amazed if the 96 was different but it could be.

I have tried until I ran down the battery, I filled the filter with diesel waiting for battery to charge my 85 has a hand primming pump which works great .

self bleeding e300d
The e300d is self bleeding but make sure the tank is full and it helps to have the car parked with the front lower then the rear.

Crank 30 secs at a time, rest 10 secs, crank again. Do that 3-4 times then stop and let the starter cool off and battery re-charge.
Make certain you installed the pre-filter oring if you replace it too. New one doesnt come witth that oring. Prefill that cavity too and button up. If it splutters, keep cranking until you are 100% certain its running. It wont hurt the starter.

The pre-filter is the start of delivery; anything you can do to create flow (suction) as soon as possible, helps push the remaining bubbles in the fuel lines through the system and out the return line.
+1/2 tank of fuel and nose down also helps immensely.
