Question 300SDL tranny fluid leak

Clean the tranny as it is leaking fluid. Stuffed a kitchen towel where the circle is and took it for a spin. Kitchen towel is wet with tranny fluid. It is definitely somewhere in the linkage area on the driver side.

1) Any idea which seal is leaking?
2) Can I change it out without removing the tranny? Just drop the tranny down a bit.

Any info is appreciated.

On my car it looked like the shift shaft seal; it wasn't.

I'm not on the right computer or I'd check for you; probably memory says it was the B2 reaction piston seal. It was about $0.82 from the dealer, but took two hours to replace. Drop pan, drop valve body, remove shifter lever and switch. Push piston inwards about 1/2" 12 mm from outside, remove crusty/glassy old seal in pieces, install new seal, push piston back out from inside, reassemble. I did NOT lower the transmission at all.

BoiseBenz, you are right on. Thanks

Lowered the tranny. Removed the shift lever and the NSS switch and found the leak from the B2 reaction piston seal. It is about <1" in diameter and is all hidden behind the NSS switch and no wonder I could not see it. Guess what I found, it was already welded with JB weld, may be by PO, but is all coming off.

I took the easy way out for now. I cleaned it all up, cut a cirular metal sheet to cover the area and glued it with high temp RTV. It should hold and stop the leak. If it fails again then I will do what you suggested and change out the o-ring/seal from the inside.

Thanks again.

Need some help on dropping the valve body - 722.317 tranny

New year resolution is to fix the leak in the B2 reaction piston o-ring. I have never dropped valve body before and I really do not want to mess this up. The car is in the garage jacked up and if I mess up the tranny, I will be in deep s$$t. A leaky tranny is better than no tranny.

I have removed the pan and filter, remove the NSS switch and have access to the back of the B2 reaction piston. As per post #2, I need to drop the valve and push the piston in a little bit and remove the o-ring from the side of the casing.

Questions:

1) The part I have identified is 0169973448 - is this correct?
2) Is dropping the valve body pretty straight forwards? How many bolts to undo?
3) Any loose part will come out that I cannot put back on?

Any tips are welcome.

Thanks

nothing will come shooting out. a number of 6mm (10mm hex) bolts are all that hold it on. During reinstall just guide that odd little steel tube elbow home, and ensure the shift plunger slot molded nylon gizmo on valve body)is aligned with the shift rod pin (trans body).

Put the o-ring back but need HELP to adjust the linkage

Managed to put the new o-ring in with BoiseBenz help. You need a lot of patience as the clearance to remove the old o-ring is very limited. I broke the lip of the B2 reaction piston. It was made of plastic and was very brittle and when I tried to push the piston inside the tranny, it broke. It is the black color part on the right in the picture. The linkage inside is still in place. The broken plastic lip is very flimsy and is nothing like what is in the part's picture. I hope it should be OK unless you advise me otherwise.

When I did the o-ring I need to

1) Remove the metal strip which goes on the ratchet notches.
2) Remove the shifter shaft

I took some pictures before I did the work but it does not show clearly which notches in the ratchet is 'Park' position. Basically I need info to put the tip of the metal strip back into the right notch.

Any info is appreciated.

Just move the valve body plunger to the right spot to get the shifter reconnected. It can't be in the "wrong" spot as it can only be hooked up one way. Of course, remember that the shift handle in the cabin is locked in "park" unless you've moved it--move it to another gear position if it helps re-assembly.

Here's the link for the *E*lectronic *P*arts *C*atalog (hence "EPC" name), which is free. http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/login.jsp Yes, it will ask for a credit-card number, but only to verify that you live in USA. The rest of the world has to buy this service.

Car is back on the road - no leak

Thanks BoiseBenz, loepke72 and this forum.

Car is back on the road. Valve body plunger attached OK. No more leak from behind the NSS switch. One of the toughest job I have tackled as I could have butchered up the tranny.

Next job, B2 cover seal and tranny mount. Scheduled out for next 6 months. Isn't driving old MBZ a lot of fun?

Good job - congrats. I have a tranny leak too (passenger side - somewhere)... after read this I'm pretty sure that I would not be attempting this fix as a DIY... know my limitations...

Thanks.

If it is from the passenger side, then 2 places that come to mind, there may be others.

1) B2 piston cover o-ring. Need to do mine but it can wait.
2) The dip stick attachment to the tranny.

(2) is easy. (1) is moderate to easy. The B2 reaction piston o-ring I just did, the tranny shop wanted $900 to fix it. They would drop the tranny and a $2.34 part from the dealership. It is a lot of beer for $897, cheers.

Wow - $900 bucks... yikes. Yeah, I'm pretty sure (90%) that on mine it's not coming from the dip stick, which I can see - the other place I can't see - it's obstructed by the exhaust pipe which runs very close to it and it's up above that.

Wonder what it takes to lower the transmission some...
