82 300-CD AIR CONDITIONER QUESTIONS

Hello!

Basic question here guys. To get the AC running on my W123 82 300-CD is as simple as turning the dial to the coldest setting and pushing on of the buttons that activates the fan? The only button I recognize is the defrost button, if that is pressed while on the cool setting should cold air be blowing?

It's getting hot here, and I am going to start to trouble shoot the AC. I've tried a mixture of things to get it to blow cold but no luck. I found an un-hooked wire down by the compressor, but can't tell if it plugs into the compressor??

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum.

Tell us what you have tried so far...
and what AC tools you own or have easy access to...
You need to put your location into the upper right hand part of your posts... it makes a difference in the advice offered... particularly for AC stuff....
Can you take pictures of the nipples used to install refrigerant... trying to find out if you have R12 or 134a or Junk in your system. Are there any little stickers posted anywhere which would indicate what you have in the system ? Please answer all these questions with your first reply... will really speed up the process...

pictures pictures pictures.

Pushbutton unit

Far Left button, Defrost, fan on max and monovalve open. Not cool air even though the compressor is running

2nd left button, all air flaps open,

3rd, depends on temp wheel. This is considered full automatic. Mercedes reccomends you leave it on this center button for the majority of the time. cool out of the far left and right vents and it leaks out of the defrost vents sometimes causing condensation on the windshield

4th, "EC" same as 3rd only no compressor.

5th, OFF and all flaps closed.

This is of course assuming all your flaps are working properly.

Thank you, great description of the button and their uses. How about a power supply. As any power wired to the compressor?

I will have her on ramps tomorrow and will take some pictures. Thanks for the help.

Below are photos of the wire that I believe hooks into the compressor and pictures of the compressor. I can't figure out where this plugs into! Can anyone tell me? Thanks.

yup that wire is for the compressor.
if you look at the compressor from the front, the 1:30 position between the belt groove and the body of the compressor should be two spade terminals. put the wire you have on those terminals. if the connector is bent, have the bent part tilt the wires away from the belt.
in your last pic, the lower of the two oil cooler hoses should be obscuring the wire connector.

Called around to a bunch of shops today. Not one MB shop had R12. They were more than willing to switch me over though

Ended up finding it at Jiffy Lube of all places. They filled her up and now I am blowing nice cold air! Only issue is that fan will not come on at all. I have found a work around. If I put the defrost on for maybe 5 seconds and then switch over to AC vent and floor and get nice cold air. The flow could be better though. Anyone know what why I have to do the defrost sequence above first to get the AC moving? Also, what would be the 1st step in increasing the flow of air? Seems like more than enough coming to the floor vents, but the two outside vents could use some more.

Thanks in advance! Nice to have some cool air on a 98F day, thanks for all the input. Even to the guy who sent me the pdf of what each button does.

sounds like your climate control needs to be resoldered. also, you may have some vacuum issues.
