W123 A/C Capacity Mystery
Put in new dryer, new hose from dryer to expansion valve, took to mechanic who evacuated system, held vacuum for 45 min, put in one 12 oz. can R12 oil and one 12 oz. can R12. Mechanic said the system was full, judging by dryer window, and did not need any more. That doesn't make sense, as the car requires 48 oz R12. Any idea what's happening?
Thanks a bunch, Jeremy |

I would have put 3 or 4 oz in the r/d and 4 oz spread out in the rest of the system before sealing it up and pulling a vac. The weight on the sticker is for the freon only, no oil weight.

I have run into a couple of cars now that have been over filled with oil.
I think the systems were repeatedly refilled with cans of oil / gas mix that have left too much oil behind after the gas leaked out. I dumped a bunch of oil out of them vacuumed and recharged and they got much cooler. But this could be very dangerous because these systems need the proper amount of oil in them to lubricate the pump, and its nearly impossible to know how much oil is in the system without thoroughly cleaning the system and adding back the proper amounts.

Thanks for all the responses. It's a 1984 300D. The compressor looks like it's a Delphi. Can't make out any more than that. Does that info explain anything?

Forgot to mention that one of the cans, the one the seller claimed was oil, had all the info rubbed off, so you couldn't read what the contents of the can were. As the R12 gauges fit on this can, which had a nipple in the center, I figured it was okay. Might I have added another gas with higher pressure that was in a can with an R12 fitting???

None of those quantities make sense. Where did you get the 48 oz figure?

Sticker says 2.9 lb. When you multiply 16 oz per pound by 2.9 you get 46.4 oz. I just rounded up to 48. Am I missing something else? |

The sticker on my '83 calls for 2.6#, which is 42 oz, or exactly 3-14oz cans.
