fueling slow - advice?

My 300td sat for a while, and I have been getting everything up to par for it to be our regular drive. One item that really sucks right now is filling it with diesel fuel takes 20 minutes or more. The diesel foams up as it goes into the tank and you can only pump on 5 seconds, off 5 seconds to fill the tank. I got under the tank and checked out the fuel vent. I pulled it off and was able to blow through it - so at the vent it is working. Without dropping the tank I can't really get to the remainder of the vent system.

I did notice that right where I fill the tank there is another opening I guess for air, or spillage as it is right below the cap opening. This second line appears to join back with the fuel filling line just before it goes into the tank. I was wondering if my trouble is possibly this "air vent" has gotten blocked?

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this? I am considering using the shop vac to see if that other pipe is blocked.

Using a shop vac around fuel is asking for an explosion.
The inside layer of the fill hose has probably come apart and is blocking flow. If it sat for a long time with the fuel cap off, there is the possibility of a nest in the vent, but not very likely.

Well - it never sat with the cap off. I really don't think the fill hose is coming apart or blocked. I think it is all metal to the tank, and there are no signs at the upper part of it of any corrosion. I was looking back at the FSM cd and the TD tank is different from the sedan in that the tank is sitting more flat and maybe a inch or two into the fill line there is another vent that comes off and goes to the tank. My thought is that this line might be blocked. I can get to one end of it pretty easily - but not the other. Any suggestions on how to find or remove a blockage in one of the vent lines?

I know

I had read through the other thread - they didn't solve the issue - and the last post was last year.

It is frustrating that to resolve this I probably have to drop the tank. I am pretty sure I can only get to one side of the tank vent hose off the fill line, but the other side is on the tank and goes thru a grommet. I don't believe I can get to it unless I drop the tank.

I never had this issue before - and I have tried different fuel stations - so I don't think it is pump related. It has something to do with the vent on the tank or the filler hose.

seems like the pump

Okay after monitoring this the last few fill ups I may still have an issue but I think the fuel pumps and nozzles at the stations are equally to blame. I believe some of the stations I frequent locally use a nozzle or pump nozzle combo that introduces to much air in the diesel hence foamy diesel and it taking a long time to get down the fill pipe.

I did locate and kind of clean the vent assembly or at the the pressure release at the end of the vent tubing and I do notice no pressure release of air when I open the tank.

I have been traveling and have noticed as I got out of state that the nozzles for diesel are different from those for gas at stations I have dropped at. I think there is likely a reason and the foamy diesel might be it. I have been able to fill the tank unattended and not have it click off.

We will continue to see on this one.
