A fellow at work bought a K&N filter for his Porsche. For as high a premium people pay for those cars, I think the engineers at Porsche would put one in there if it really did make a difference.

Yup, it's junk intended for the autozone crowd. Don't put one on any engine you care about and definety don't buy any car or engine with one installed.

I installed hundreds of them at dealerships, Porschasports, and now the shop where I work now. Fifteen Porsche engines in sand buggys all used K&N at the Baja 1000 as well as many other racers there. I don't remember seeing anything but K&N filters on the motorcycles. Foam blankets were used on the dustiest roads.

I have torn down some high mileage engines and have never seen the tell tale vertical scratches on the cylinder walls denoting hard particle injestion.

I've read several reports that say the K&N filters don't filter as well as others. In the real world that doesn't seem to mean squat."

From what I read in some other sites is the K&N Filters were not sealing well in the housings. When I got mine I found that the Rubber was very stiff. So this could be why they are not sealing well.
I simply put a bead of silicone around the Sealing Area and installed it so I know mine sealed well.

People are condeming all K&N Air Filters based a test on one model.

The Wix Oil Filter for the 617.952 at 32 microns is poor filtration; yet the Wix Oil Filters made for the later model Diesels are fine.
No one seems to want to believe the same situation could exist with the K&N Air Filters.

I did not buy the K&N because I thought it would give me better performance. I bought it because I wanted a reusable Air Filter.

Read K&N's warranty, then read your walmart paper element warranty and tell me which one is more comprehensive.

Look through the post. My comments are in there. I don't question that a K&N type lets in a bit more dirt. I just don't see any quantifive as to how much it would cause the engine to wear.
