Rpm gauge lines
On my 81 300SD the first and second line are confusing.
The Rpm gauge goes in 500 Rpm intervals. Does this mean the first solid line is 500 or is it the second thin line right above it. Right now my idle is set about mid way between the thin line and 1000 Rpm this I guessed was about 750 Rpm. The thing that puzzled me was everything about these cars seems so exact and here was that second line out of place on the gauge. I was thinking maybe that was 750 and I was reading it as 500. Can any one confirm this for me ?? Thanks.

Hope it helps
The first thin line means 500 RPM. Here's my cluster when I first bought the car ('83 300SD)

One more question answered on my quest for the perfect idle.
The 500 just seemed a little odd spaced. So about mid way between 500 and 1000 should be my goal. Thanks guys !!!

I doubt that the factory uses the tachometer in the cluster to set the idle anyway. They probably have an external tach that's actually calibrated. Adjust the idle to where the engine is smooth and doesn't stall when you put it in gear.
