1986 300 SDL - A/C Help
 

I have a 300 SDL 1986 that has problems with the A/C. I have tried to add new refrigerant, but within a week or two, it is gone.

The blower fan works, but it shoots hot air.

Does anyone know of a good A/C repair shop for this car. I have tried generic A/C repair shops and they do not want to look at it.

Your advise will help.

are you sure you don't just wanna do it yourself?
firstly you have to find where the leak is. odds are good it's in a line, but it could be in a coil.
your user name says miami, so I'm going to assume that's where you would like to find a shop. I cannot help you there though.
if you want help learning what to do yourself, feel free to ask!

Thanks for your reply. This is what I have done in the past.

A/C worked until about 3 years ago. I replaced the A/C control on the dash. I got it to work.

Then after some point, it stopped working again. I took it to an electrician that diagnosed it as a capacitor piece, that looks about the size of a cigarette box which is under the hood by the middle dash area.

Then it worked for a year. I took it again to the electrician, he said that by adding a transistor element, it could come back to work again. So he soldered a transistor piece to this capacitor and the A/C worked for a week.

I took it one more time and now he said it was not the capacitor or the transistor element, now it was the compressor. How could that be? I am not sure.

I wanted to get someone's opinion before I went all out. If were to change the compressor, what other items would I need? Also, is that a DIY kind thing that I can do?

woof. capacitor, and transistor... out of my league. BrianCarlton is most versed in the SDL's a/c controls. the kilma relay is part of the system, needs input from various parts of the vehicle to allow the a/c compressor to engage.
search kilma relay on here, jumpering pins in the relay will engage the compressor, and at least verify if it's bad or not.
do you have gauges for the refrigerant?

first thing I would do is to see if your compressor is working and how much refrigerant you have. To check your compressor and to see how much referigrant you have jump the pressure switch. If you see bubbles in the accumulator then you have low refrigerant and moisture in the system and most likely a leak somewhere. Is it R12 or R134a? Do you have a set of pressure gauges? if you tell me the pressures I can better tell you where to go with it
