Valve adjustment

When adjusting the valves on a "new to you" engine , and you find they are all tight. Would it be a good idea to run the engine and then go back and readjust within a few thousand miles rather than the 15,000.

If yes how many do this and what amount of miles would be sufficient to burn off any carbon or debris on the valve seat area due to the tight valves?

a very good idea. I would do it. and I would put less than 100 miles on and recheck. then recheck again in 250miles.
then again, if ALL the valves were tight, I'd verify I was measuring properly.
the measurements go between the cam lobe and the follower. not between the follower and the valve cap.

yes, I checked after about 500 miles and they all needed to be readjusted. When I got my engine all of the valves were pretty much as tight as they would go, I don't think it is that unusual.

I have heard of this before, but I haven't done it. I did my 240D shortly after I bought it and then again 15,000 miles later. All valves were way tight the first time. Several valves were tight the second time, but not by a whole lot. I haven't put enough miles on my 300 to need to do it a second time yet, though its time will come soon (after I get back from the sandbox next year).

It is a very good idea...
but an even better idea to combine with it... is to do what the MB FSM suggests be done ' on principle' after a certain number of miles...
and that is renew ( replace ) those two nuts which , when adjusted and locked together, make and KEEP your valve clearances...

I agree, that is a good procedure.

Many customers bring neglected cars to me.
If I am rushed = customer needs it back the same day:

#1. Adjust the valves, take it for a 3-5 mile run in a lower gear ( Italian Tune-up links thread )

#2. Re-adjust the valves, take it for a 3-5 mile run in a lower gear ( Italian Tune-up links thread )

#3. Re-adjust the valves, take it for a 3-5 mile run in a lower gear ( Italian Tune-up links thread )

#4. Offer to re-check in a month.

where are you getting that? I see $1.94 per nut, which would be $40 for a 5 cylinder, not $100.

Edit: never mind, just saw that one of them is over $8 each.... yikes!

Where do they wear? The only thing I can see go wrong with them is they get rounded.

This seems like a common practice. I will have to recheck mine I've put over 1000 miles on the car since doing the valves for the first time all where tight.

Where are the nuts wearing ? The threads from continuous loosening and tightening or the outer edges due to overzealous mechanics ?

These are used as jamb nuts right ? The lock is when they are tightened together ?

The internal threads due to the constant pounding of the cam shaft lobe follower.
Threads like these show how many people do not have or do not read the MB FSM..

How many times can you reuse the vc gasket?

And answers to these threads are greatly appreciated and accompanied by a big "Thank you " from those of us who don't.

Thanks ! would have never guessed that .
If they stay tight you wouldn't think they would wear.

(working on the FSM thing I have the 602/603 not good in this case)
