Re-booting Annular Axles 1981 240D

Finally started to pull the Annular axles today. Prior to starting I have searched for a step by step method on this site. Would rather read about problems and how to fix, then repeat known issues. Could not find anywhere about pulling Annular axles. A lot about the other type, so I started anyway.

Put the car up on jacks
Pulled right rear tire, and hung the brake caliper
Needed to run and get a 8MM Hex to remove the inner side of the axle. – problems
When I try and loosen the bolt, the axle TURNS and unable to stop.
Put the manual trans in 1st, and the axle still turns
Did not put the parking brake on, since already removed the caliper.

I should have broken those inner bolts when the car was on the ground. So, now will put the tires back on, lower the car and then brake those inner bolts.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi Bob,

I might be mistaken with your car but on my 300D (same vintage) the parking brake operates on its own system - a cable and drum brake assembly. So removing the pads / caliper wouldn't be a problem.

However, if I were you I'd try to stop the axle from turning by holding the axle between the two boots with a pair of vice grips. Gently does it of course - you don't want horrible gouges ion that part. Protect with a thick bit of rubber or even loads of masking tape before you apply those jaws of death!

You have probably put the tires on.

But if the emergency brakes were in working order, you have used them. They are a seperate brake system from the calipers.

Now What

Put the tires back on, lowered the car, out the car in gear, hand brake on, now the axle will not turn (this is good), but I am unable to ‘break’ any of the inner bolts on either of the axles. Attached is a photo, of the 8MM Hex wrench I am using. I guess I am not strong enough, so I was wondering if Sears, or someone makes a 1/2inch drive, 8MM Hex type tool. Then I can use my breaker bar.

This is why, I am glad I am retired for the 2nd time. Now, I have all the time I need, rather then just the weekend.

Hex sockets are available from many sources in 3/8's and 1/2" along with other drive sizes.

Bob, buy a 3/8 8mm socket, it has the hex bit as part of the socket. then a short extention and maybe afoot long breaker bar. I use my 3/8 drive craftsman long handle ratchet to break them loose.

with the allen wrench you show, maybe put a piece of pipe over it for leverage.

You really don`t have to remove the wheels, calipers and rotors etc... to remove the axles.

Once you have the car jacked up and safely on jack stands and front wheels blocked. remove the bolt in the hub and remove it. 13mm socket with a short extention.

with the parking brake on, and your lovely assistant helping you, loosen the bolts on the axle with your 8mm. might be able to do 2 at a time because of the boot and its bellows.
have your assistant release the park brake, turn the axle to line up the next 2 or 3 bolts, apply brake, loosen bolts etc... once they are loose, release the brake and remove the 6 bolts.
push axle towards the tire, drop it down on the differential end, and pull it out.

If it sticks in the hub splines, use a brass drift and hammer to tap it out. reach under the car to hold the axle from droping down, and then lift it out.

I gave a little write up in your other thread.

Hope this helps.

Charlie, thanks for your postings. Until today, I have never done any type of this sort of work. I just not understand until I could see the actual parts for myself. After messing around for a few hours, today, I now understand what you are telling me. I guess I am just a slow learner. Again, thanks

That`s what this Forum is all about, "Ain`t It Great" .

Wish I knew about it back in 97 when I first bought the 85 , could have saved a ton of money

Hang around here reading the daily posting, and you will learn enough to be in information over load .
Iam always learning some new project I read about I need to impliment, or upgrade to.

Like the 300TD sway bar upgrade in my 85 300D. It never ends.

If you were closer I would give you a hand.

After trying just to break just 1 inner bolt, gave up and put everything back together.
Wish I had a lift, would make life a lot easier than working under the car. I am retired military, and can work on post at a craft shop, 7 dollars an hour just to rent one of there lifts. Now, not sure what to do, it is HOT here in NC so, maybe wait until cooler weather. The boots are not torn, but do have crackes, so for the time, will just keep an eye on the boots. I only use the car for my running around, so not much miles anymore. A few years ago, put 700 miles per week, now around 200-300 per month

hey bob, where are you in NC? anywhere near Mt Holly (charlotte) since you mention post, I figure you are near brag or hope, but had to ask.
I'll be rebooting several axles to put in the for sale section soon, and you are welcome to share in the rebooting process with your car if you are nearby when I get the tools.

Live in Fayetteville, just about 4 miles from Fort Bragg. Thanks for the offer, maybe try and take it up with you in the next few weeks.
