swapping transmissions

I have an 86 190d 5 speed and i'm thinking about getting an 87 300d auto. I was wondering if I coud swap the tranny from the 190 to the 300 and the tranny from the 300 to the 190 without any problems or extra parts.
Also, I was wondering if the 300d had more leg room than the 190d.. that's the main reason why I would like to buy the 300d.

'87 300D: more leg room, more head room.

"87 300D & '86 190D 2.5: Same block, different flywheel and clutch IIRC. The auto is different for the 2.5 and 3.0, different power and torque ratings, different shift points and stall-speed, but AFAIK it will bolt up and run fine. You'll need to figure out the Bowden cable linkage, vacuum-modulator plumbing, other things.

I'm doing a similar conversion with an OM616-7. I think the clutch should be the same, but you will need the manual flywheel and the drive shaft will need to be lengthened. You'll need a new or modified cross member also, I believe. Shouldn't need the bowden cable anymore and then vacuum lines can just be plugged. The interior is where it gets tricky, but I can't help you there. Do a search, this has been done before.

Ha Ha how sweet... drove around today... effin sweet is all I can say.

In order to put a 5 spd in the '87 w124(om603) you need:

Custom driveshaft
Transmission cross member/support. I modified mine temporarily but plan on getting the right one soon. The 190 cross member will not work!!
All the 5 spd parts from the 190.

Diesel vs gas flywheel is silly since they both are the same weight. maybe a couple pounds difference.

Driveshaft is a major issue. If you want I can explain in detail or you can look at my thread in the diesel performance section.
