You door jamb may say 10/83, 11/83, 12/83, etc. But it is a 1984 model year Cali version built in late 1983. The '83 models don't have ARVs, Vacuum Convertors, Rack Position Sensors and etc.

For #3, it should be power and ground. You will need a wire diagram to be sure and should tell you about the other 5 wires. I know in the Haynes manual it has a pretty thorough wire diagram.

#14, the ARV (Air Recirculation Valve) Vents boost to create a higher pressure difference between the intake and exhaust manifold. This will get more exhaust gasses to flow into the intake through the EGR valve for emission purposes. You can leave the ARV vacuum source unplugged and you'll be fine.

Thanks!
Yes if you have this style pedal.

If your '80 car has the corresponding items pointed in red along with the rod and spring, then you can easily use the original turbo linkages and run the bowden cable.

The earlier picture I posted of the other pedal style is from the earlier w123 versions that uses a rod that moves forward and back to control throttle functions.

Checked the jamb and the donor car date of production was 8/83. i was under the impression that most manufactures considered September to be considered the next model year? maybe Mercedes is earlier?

Well, today the throttle linkage issue was solved. Because my non-turbo car seemed to have the later style accelerator pedal, I used all the non-turbo linkages parts on the side of the valve cover to connect to the pedal and left all the turbo linkage stuff on top of the valve cover for the bowden cable and cruise control. seems to work perfectly.

Now the transmission wiring. in the photo above there is the pink vacuum canister thing, right below that is where the harness is supposed to plug in. well my car does not have a spot for that. it just has the wires that went to the old transmission. do you know where I have to wire the new transmission harness to?

Thanks!

what i need to know now is how to wire up the over boost solenoid, i know one side goes to a grounding sensor on the intake, does anyone know where that is and where do i grab power for the solenoid? is it constant or accessory? and coming from the 1980 harness going to the glow plug relay was a 5 wire plug. i wired up the turbo relay with 4 of the wires but now have one wire left, it is a green wire, from what i can gather, it is the temp gauge wire. but coming from the turbo engine harness is 2 wires, one is the temp gauge, i don't know which and i don't know what the 2nd wire in that harness will do?

this is the 1980 glow plug harness, notice it is 5 wires. one should be the temp gauge. the wire i have left after wiring up the turbo relay is green.

the harness coming from the 1984 turbo engine, part of it goes to the glow plug relay. 2 wires split off. one of which i think is the temp gauge, which wire that is, i dont know. and what do i do with the 2nd wire left?

do you know? thanks for the help.

Hi.. Great info, thanks. I'm thinking about doing a turbo diesel conversion to an 1980 model right hand drive 280T petrol wagon and as I have never seen the turbo option here I am wondering if there were any clearance issues around the steering that may have prevented turbo fitment?... No doubt the petrol to turbo diesel RHD conversion may present some other challenges than are mentioned above so if anyone has already tackled this job I would very much appreciate your thoughts. Next question relates to final drive ratio's.... Can someone advise re whether to keep the 280T wagon ratio or if there is something better suited... I plan on doing some single axle car trailer towing as well, so gearing suited to that purpose is what I need. Thanks.

The only thing in the area of the steering box other than the starter is the exhaust pipe.

What's the final drive ratio of the 280T now?

[edit] Did MB sell a W123 280T? Nitske's book doesn't list a 280T, but it's known to have holes.

The overboost protection solenoid needs 12V when the key is in the ON/RUN position. The 1982 TD taps into fuse 14.

The Haynes manual says the 1980 glow relay 6-pin connector position 3 goes to the temp gauge. The glow relay pin outs are different for 1980 and 1984 as follows:

1984 relay:
1 black with blue and green = fuse bus 15 (key on?)
2 violet = neutral start switch
3 black = glow indicator
4 brown = ground
1980 relay:
6-pin connector:
1 black with white = glow indicator
2 red with black = fuse bus 15 (key on?)
3 green = temp gauge
4 brown = ground
5 violet = starter relay
6 no connection

8-pin connector:
1,2,3,5,7 = glow plugs
4 unused
6 green = temp sensor, coolant
8 brown with green = temp sensor, glow
Caveat, don't assume the pin numbers or positions from the 1980 relay apply to the 1984 relay. YMMV.

The same manual isn't clear how the 1984 temp sensor connects to the gauge other than through a green wire. If we use the 1982 TD diagram, there's a 2-pin connector that contains a green wire for the temp gauge and a brown with green wire for the overboost protection solenoid. Can you trace the 2-pin connector wires to where they connect on the engine to confirm?

Looking at the wiring diagram, the temp sensor wire goes through some transistors and such in the glow relay that I'm not sure you should hook it up directly to a later temp gauge. Have a replacement triple gauge handy if you decide to try your luck without further research.
