Last MB Diesel Auto?

What was the last year & model diesel Mercedes Benz automobile sold in North America? What was the last diesel wagon offered? Did any recent models (within the past 20 or so years) offer a standard transmission (besides the 240)? Is a diesel still sold in Europe?
I know the 2.5 & 3 litre diesels are widely regarded as outstanding engines, but for some reason the 3.5 litre is regarded as an engine to avoid. Why? What year & models used the 3.5? (No, I don't own a 3.5)
Also, what other diesel automotive engines did MB make? What are the most reliable?
Thanx for helping me brush up on my Mercedes knowledge. As a recent convert to dieseldom, (83 300D; my second Mercedes & first diesel) I appreciate this ShopForum & your individual input.

The last diesel sold in the US was the 1999 E300 Turbo.

They have all kinds of interesting diesels in europe with CDI engines.. as of now not allowed to be sold here.

The 3.5 was a lemon because it was basically bored out of a 3.0L block and built with substandard, weaker connecting rods wich bent and caused catastrophic failure. Stay away from that one.

I think the last manual diesels were in the 123.. the 240D and Im pretty sure a 300D you could get with at 4 speed (non turbo). There were never any turbodiesels sold with manual transmissions, not even in europe.

You may have been able to get a 201 190D with a 4 or 5 speed..

turbodiesel is correct except the 123 300D manual was a Euro only car. The 190D was sold in the US with a manual, but rare. I saw an '86 300D with a manual only once. It was a US car. I expect that it is as rare as a 124 300E with manual.

Have a great day,

I've seen two 300D manuals - One was a five speed and the bumpers looked like European bumpers. The other was a 240D (four speed manual) with a 300D turbodiesel engine.

They all offered a "standard" transmission. It was an automatic.

I have seen a 124 300E(86 model) with a 5 speed stick for sale several years ago in Dallas...but I have not seen a 124 300D with a manual trans....makes me wonder if that would be a good combination...as with the revs falling off between shifts it seems it would make it difficult to get up to speed quickly... as diesels of the 80's vintage had some turbo lag about them

There is a beautiful 1999 E300 diesel currently on EBay. Item #599319343.

I've recorded its VIN in my database of cars I'm tracking. When it comes up for resale in 2013, its MINE.

Last US Diesels

The last diesel wagon sold in the US was a 1987 300TD. This is the 124 body and 1987 was the only year a diesel was offered in this body style.
