Picked up my first Diesel 75 300D

It was listed in the CL yesterday and I pretty much jumped on it because i have a soft sport for these cars. I took a look this morning and cranked the engine which fired pretty quickly. I did not need to listen any more and handed the cash.

When the tow truck dropped it off, I realized that the brakes were non existent so i''m going to bleed the system out today and maybe swap the master cylinder if need be.

From my very brief assessment, the trunk lid has some rust and so does the trunk floor but not through. The seal is pretty useless. The windshield will need to be released and probably replaced as it's starting to fog up.

No a/c (of course) but the paint while dull will shine up.

I know the W114 body quite well but as I mentioned, this is my first diesel. I would be grateful for any advise that y'all can give.

Thumbs up

Buy all your diesel fuel from a Walmart Supercenter that has a Murphy's Oil sales store on the grounds that sells diesel. That's where I buy all mine for the MB and my diesel motorcoach. It's fresh and it's usually but not always the cheapest in any area.

Be careful - like SLs, MB diesels are habit forming.

Thanks for the tip, yep, it's not like me to get suckered into buying cars for no good reason. I really want to try the bio-diesel thing.

Is it true that these things can get close to 30mpg?

Routinely....that's why they make such good daily-drivers - they don't need to be fed so often.

My Dad's '74 240D auto trans got just under 30 mpg over-the road when new.

My '99 E300 gets 27 to 28 mpg freeway/city driving combined - but without the A/C turned on, around town.

Congrats.

The W115 300D does NOT have a oil bath air filter. The W115 240D does though.

The best my 76 300D has got was 27 MPG.

Keep us up to date on the progress your new diesel.

you can get bio diesel at the green spot. there's one on buckner close to the white rock lake. people say they have good breakfast tacos. BUT, they are not made on site. i think they are opening up one on oak lawn ave. not sure. my car has been down for over a year and a half. my 90lbs wife demands 6 meals a day and killing my budget for fun stuff -breast feeding!

beautiful car!

Looks like you haven't added it to your signature line yet. Are you waiting until you get the official adoption papers back in the mail?

Ha, it was cheap but not that cheap. Now that I have a diesel I have to learn how to be really cheap and start doing things like tracking mileage running cars on used oil.

Any other suggestions?
