Idler arm repair kit order
What is the order that the repair kit should go in?
I think I installed it incorrectly. From to end to bottom: 1. Long thick bolt 2. Drag link connector 3. dust cap 4. Big washer 5. bushing 6. steel tube 7. bushing 8. small washer 9. Lock Nut Pardon my ignorance of the correct term for the steering component that attaches at the top. Edit: I finally got EPC working in windows 7. Sure enough 3 and 4 are mixed up. Gotta take that apart again

The FSM shows a thick washer on the top and a thinner, but larger diameter washer on the bottom. So it might depend on what you mean by "big" and "little."
It also has two notes on the idler arm and washers. 1) If washer has been inserted between intermediate dust cap and intermediate steering arm, put washer back again. The other note refers to a washer inserted between the two bearings, maybe 6.5 in the list above. It says: 2) In the event of complaints about noise, install steel washer p/n 115 463 01 52 between both slide bushings. There's a drawing showing a 0.5 mm washer in the middle. So there might be one, two, or maybe three washers in the whole thing. I'd say "thick" washer between steering arm and dust cap, maybe a small washer inserted in between the bearings, and then a large diameter "sealing" washer on the bottom. Hope you don't need to take it apart, again. |

Adam,
For future reference, take a couple of pics before you jump in with a wrench (I have learned the hard way!). If you are still unsure, I or some one else can go & take a pic of theirs & post it on here or a friend could send it to your phone. Good luck with it !!!

Thanks for the link to the FSM article Yak.
EPC was even more helpful in identifying where it all goes. Layback, Yeah yeah I know. I was just so eager to get it on after I forced that stuck bushing out with my brass drift. I'll remember next time.

Torque for the Large Bolt
Getting set up to do this job within the next 2 weeks, along with steering damper replacement. Can anyone supply the tightening torque for the large bolt holding the whole assembly together?
Thanks,

At least one complete thread should be visible on the bolt after tightening the self-locking nut. Tightening torque 120 Nm = 88.5 Foot Pounds. Last edited by whunter; 07-29-2011 at 04:14 PM. |
