Diesel Benz Noob...

Noob from Springfield, Oregon.

I bought a 1976 280SLC from a friend and fell in love. So I sold all of our other cars and bought a 1983 300D with a lot of cosmetic problems. I figured that with the left over money, I could just fix them.

Wasn't a huge fan of the car so bought a 1985 300SD instead. Love it. 267k miles, what seems to be a rebuilt head, and great runner.

We had a tow hitch attached to it and it tows wonderfully (low tongue-weight obviously).

Gave the 300D to our 14 year-old son figuring we couldn't put him in a better car when he's driving.

Questions (on the SD):

1. Sunroof. I opened it manually, but virtually destroyed the plastic nut while doing so. Luckily, it worked long enough to get the sunroof closed, but now it won't work. The lights dim when the switch is actuated, but nothing happens. Any suggestions?

2. AC. Swapped out the compressor. But the compressor only engaged when you take apart the relay and press the connector together. Now, it won't do that and there is no power to the compressor.

Since the swap, the air flow doesn't seem to be moving correctly from the dash, def, and feet areas. The defrost override quit kicking out heat as well.

Any suggestions?

3. Passenger mirror. Adjustment doesn't work. Can move manually, obviously.

4. Tach doesn't work.

5. Cruise doesn't work.

Everything else is great. Runs and drives very smooth. Great car! Very happy with the purchase.

Oh, wait...

6. Passenger seat adjuster won't adjust forward. Is there an override?

1. You may need to grease the sliding roof rails, special (expensive) stuff, and/or clean out the cable tube.
2. Your CCU may have failed, pull it and inspect for cold solders, this is the usual suspect.
3. Can't help.
4. There is an OVP relay with a fuse on it, inspect for replacement, not sure where it is.
5. Normal, the usual suspect there is the amplifier located on the steering column.
6. I don't think so, but check all fuses by completely removing them and inspect the ends.
BTW, your SD looks familiar! lol

Familiar indeed! Thank you for the reply! I will check these things.

Seems it may be in the fuse box, my 83 doesn't have one, but all 85's do.
I also painted the head light doors to match the body, a tremendous change, in this link
new shifter and headlights!!

Oooh. I like that. Looks good. We are going to repaint my driver's front fender and panels below the headlights soon. I might do that.

^ None.
I answered questions in my first response, yet some of the the pics I have in the computer were already posted. Instead of cropping and posting again, I simply redirected you to them.
Here are a few more.

Ok. Thanks.

In post #4 above, there are two attached photos. One is of a fuse box, and the other a parts listing. I'm not sure what those are there for.

Your 85 has item #152, the OVP relay, with item #158, another fuse. Check that fuse, it's the usual suspect for a failed tach.

Thank you for the reply!

I don't see a relay that opens like that one does. I do have one relay with a 10 amp fuse sideways on the top of it (which is not blown)...the receptacle is red. Sorry. Is that the right one? Picture of my relays below.

your OVP is the Red colored Square one. if you look closely you can see the Fuse sitting on the top of it, its the only red one there.

OK. I saw that fuse and checked it just in case. The 10 amp fuse is good.

When the car is first started and in park, if you rev the engine, the tach will move up a little. But other than that it doesn't work.

Any more ideas???

Ahh...that makes more sense. I will look at that sensor next time I have the hood open.

Thank you!
