This morning my son in law came by and said he found a 1987 190d for a thousand dollars asking that did not look all that bad from the road. So off we went as it was only perhaps 10 miles away. Hope and optimisum always spring eternally. It is usually the one that you put off going to see is the good one you misssed.

The indicated speedometer in killometers looked to be about 150k miles. The oil change record book in the dash kind of authenticated it. The interior condition screams otherwise though and the jack holes were covered over and it had an older poor repaint.

The good, engine, manual five speed, all new calipers, brake lines and fuel lines, springs and shocks. The bad,the blower motor was louder than the engine, Air is history and cruise as well, tires about fifty percent and front wheel bearing bad.

At least it was not one of the rear bearings. I really could not even decide if I wanted it or not. It is hard to get past the poor interior condition. It should be better for the indicated milage I think and believe. The floor pans were still solid as well. Basically I saw it as a car you just do the minumin to it and drive any value out of. To me there was evidence of an accident at some point as well. Perhaps the reason for the repaint.

Front door fit was poor in my opinion with no hinge wear. The engine has oil pressure a little better than one would expect at eighty degrees celcius after running a long time at 600 rpms indicated on the tach it still holds three bar. I have never seen one that did not sag at least down to 2 1/2 at hot idle. Non turbo model of course. I may regret not grabbing it. On the otherhand you can only have so many older cars. I have no time now really as well. Fuel milage would be decent though compared to a 123. Those engines start better in the cold as well. The rear wheel drive probably is limiting for winter use around here without a set of tractor tires.

I am salivating over the fact that it is a 2.5 N/A AND a five speed. Sounds like it was not totally well-taken care of. Wish Nova Scotia was not on the opposite end of the continent.
