Flush Your Coolant! An Interesting Find...

just a friendly reminder to empty, flush, and refill your coolant. did the job this past weekend and found:

1. brown/green dirty coolant

2. a wahler thermostat made in WEST GERMANY!

i was 9 when the wall came down, and the P.O. last changed his thermostat...yikes. check the pics!

Only when they say they're made in a country that no longer exists

I had an air filter once in my car that was made in West Germany.

The rest of the car was made in a country that doesn't exist anymore.

I recently switched from green coolant to the clear MB type. A co-worker just got an 87 300D and he's going to be doing a coolant flush as well (He wanted the dealer to do it originally )

Remember that lack of changing out the coolant..
OR using the wrong one...
can cause the HEATER CORE to leak... a huge ugly job to replace...
it is caused by the coolant becoming corrosive and eating a hole in it.. or the radiator ... and can technically be checked by using an ohm meter....it is in the FSM...

can you point me to the section where you can check the coolant with an ohm meter? I want to check mine. I just did a thorough coolant flush and my radiator leaked. so far no leaks inside.

no need to test, just change it every 3 years like the krauts recommend.

that's what i thought at first but then i sifted through the stuff that came out. it was a mixture of rust particles and what i think is arizona dirt/sand! i think the light & shadows in the pic make it look like an oil layer on the top of the liquid.

i'm keeping a close eye on things just in case but there's no white smoke, no overheating, no high pressure in the system long after cool down, not losing any coolant, not losing any oil... i think i'm in the clear.

Actually, "west Germany" still exists essentially as it did, it was east Germany that dissolved and took on the government of the west.

That would be an interesting read, plus it would give me an excuse to use my new Fluke.

Where was yours made? I tried to get a 300D thermostat at Pep Boys a few years ago, and they had a Whaler - made in China!

Happy Motoring, Mark
