So it was probably the check valve from what you can tell so far that caused the vacuum pump to fail?

The check valve was not there. I can only guess it got sucked into the pump.
New pump is on but vac is not 100%. The seal between engine and pump is not for vac but for oil/environment right? I have a vac plug on one of the nipples (only need one) and it may be leaking. At idle I can brake 2x and it gets hard after that. Car is slow to shut off. Got the mighty vac so I will look at it this weekend.

Thats gota be disappointing, No I don't think you can lose vacuum through the pump to block gasket. Where did the new pump come from? Maybe pull the check valve first.
