Lot's A Blow by!

I've had a '81 240 Diesel in my Land Rover for a few years now. If you remove the oil-fill cap when it's running, there seems to be an excesive amount of crank pressure. You can feel quite a breeze! I was working on a 300td the other day and thought about my problem and removed it's cap while running...Nothing! Is this something I should expect with a 240 or should I be looking for a bigger problem. And no, I haven't checked compression, but it seems to run strong. Thanks in advance.

Jim

Slow is a relative term

16 forward speeds, 4 reverse. It'll do 60 on the flats as long as there's no head wind!

Worn cylinders, rings, and valve guides. Run it til it won't start, or you can't stand the oil consumption, then rebuild.

You could just do the head and see -- for sure the valve guides aren't in good shape, and you could check the cylinders for excessive wear at the same time. You will probably go ahead and do the whole thing once you open it!

I agree totally with psfred. One of the good things about a diesel is that until you can't carry enough oil with you to get where you're going, you can keep on driving a diesel. With a gas engine, once they get tired, the typically foul spark plugs so bad you can't drive them any more.

From your description I'm quite sure that there is blow by, but "drive it 'til it drops. Most likely the overhaul will take no more then than it would now.

Good luck and keep on Truckin'!
