Blowing black smoke, replaced injectors, checked timing stretch
 

I have a 84 300sd and it's blowing lots of black smoke on acceleration. I've changed the injectors and this helped slightly but it's still blowing black smoke.

I also adjusted the valves.

The car have 262k miles on it so I thought the timing chain would need to be replaced. I pulled the valve cover off and the timing looks to be ok.

I also did a diesel purge but this didn't help.

Please look at the attached photos and let me know it the marks look off.

Is your alda screw cranked up?

I cleaned both banjo bolts and pulled the plastic cap off the alda.
I loosened the set nut and turned the alda screw CCW 1 and 2 turned but I didn't notice any difference with the smoke.

At idle, the car doesn't smoke much.

Any other ideas?

The alignment it the pics is close enough that it is not the Chain causing the problem.

When you had the Injectors out and inspected the Prechambers was the Carbon inside wet/oily looking or was it dry?
Did all of the Prechambers look the same?
Has your Crankcase Oil level been going down?

Some possibles:
Turbo Seals
EGR stuck open (if you have an EGR)
Extremely bad Valve Stem Seals or Valve guides

The ALDA is a Bellows (made of Brass I believe). I have read of one person who cracked their ALDA by over adjusting it but also thin Brass can fatigue an can crack all by itself.
I do not know what type of symtoms would be caused if the above occured.

Do we have an air supply problem?
Blocked air filter, turbo not working ?
Black smoke can be caused by over fueling or lack of air.

Take it for a drive with the air filter removed unless it looks pristine.

Black smoke is unburned diesel and not to be worried about. when u stomp on the gas u can see it but under normal driving u dont see any. Diesels blow black smoke. Go to ur nearest truckstop and watch the big trucks for a while.

I think the problem was with the EGR. I cut a piece of aluminum flashing and placed it under the gasket and re-tightened the top 2 hex nuts.
The smoking has probably gone done 95% and the car has more power.

Not sure if if aluminum flashing is the best thing to block the hole. I will probably get a piece of stainless since it is thicker and won't possibly melt like aluminum flashing. I also blocked the vacuum hose with a golf tee.

If you have those little white plastic valves on top of the Valve Cover that were supposed to control the Vacuum to the EGR You might want to Plug of the Vacuum Line going there in case the little Valves are a source of a Vacuum leak.
Or, some people remove them.

careful with that alda if you want to keep it. i say that in case that you want to remove the smoke and think the alda may be the source.

they can break even when the locking nut it loosened. i know because it happened to me today. i even let the assembly sit after it was soaked with PB Blaster for 6 hours.

if it breaks, just remove it and plug the line. takes about 3 minutes if even.
