Confused! 300 SDL Speedometer
Gentleman A 1986 300 SDL
Speedometer stopped functioning a short while ago.  My question is could it be the speedometer cable,or am I looking for a defective electronic component?  Regards Dan

The cable is inductive at the driven end rather than mechanical and not prone to failure. I'd start with a known good cable if you have access to used parts. I don't know if the 81-85 SD cable will work in an SDL. They sure look the same.

Well, the SD male plug on the back does not spin, as the one for a 123 is a more conventional female square socket that accepts a spinning cable.
I don't know how the electronic cable attaches to the cluster, but it seems to have a slot, maybe something fits in there. You'll notice no threads on the SD cluster either.

Yup it is electronic..as ours. Check ground on back of instrument cluster..remove instrument mounting screws, remove 3 pods, there is a metal strap that crosses ground from left to right. use fine steel wool to clean where it makes contact. that may be it. Check fuses of course!

I use a pencil eraser, and clean that metal strip and the contact points on it shiny! then assemble with tight screws. if that don't work, you may have either a bad cable to the sensor in the transmission, or you could have a bad speedo. by chance are you having issues starting the car with the key? or getting the lights to work on the cluster?
