Sorry to hear that. No one wants that experience with a new car. I assume there was some connection between the problems and the problematic oil pressure readings. Did you figure out what it was?

Yes. NO problem the car was as represented by the seller and the price reflected the needs.

Yes, the oil pressure was fluctuating because the rod bearing on the middle cylinder was spinning around covering and uncovering the oil hole in the crank.

My favorite machinist screwed the last parts on the motor on Monday. It is at my Indies now getting reinstalled. Another week or so and it will be ready! I'd love to get the hitch installed so I can take it to pick up my new reynard autocross car!

Follow up. The car runs so sweetly now that it sounds like a new car. I have been chasing brake issues with it though and decided the ABS was malfunctioning and bypassed it with the brake lines. The brakes seem fine now. I have the car at the paint shop now getting a sprucing up of all the door dings and repaint in the original Mangenese Brown over the rust free southern body. I am very excited to get it back as the shop is better than Maaco and is using two part paint. We are painting the lower cladding the same color.

The AC was making a racket and my indie diagnosed it as a loose belt so that is good.

I am planning to buy new tires and mount them on the 15" 8 hole wheels I got from my neighbor. Along with the very sharp interior and the euro lights it should make a car I can be proud of.

Then I have gotten a frame mount (sort of) hitch from The Gears here and a plug in trailer light harness from another member here and I am going to get it all set up so I can pull the Formula ford with it.

I might go so far as to install one of those 247 diffs in it for better fuel economy.

I also plan to remove the lovely factory exhaust set up and install something that breathes better and makes a bit of rumble for more power and better economy.

This is the most fun I have had with a street car for a while!

Tom, did you find out who originally rebuilt the engine? Plus since there were still the hone marks from the original rebuild present I imagine.. Where the bores still standard? Pistons standard? Or was the visable honing the original factory honing. With the original pistons?

I know you and your machinest have collaborated on quite a few engines by this period in time. My guess is that whoever did the rebuild sent the original crank out for turning and bearing refit. Yet the installer of the new reconditioned crank did not do a plasticgauge check of the bearings when assembling the engine.

Perhaps they even neglected to check the existing rod ends for being concetric etc. That alone could have enables the end result. A rebuilder of an engine has to really check and verify everything or the rebuild can be a waste of time. I have suspected that too many rebuild shops today either do not care enough or will not cover all the bases when doing an engine.

I have also suspected that your machinest really checks everything as he goes along from your past discussions. If the car otherwise was in pretty good shape perhaps the original dificulty before the first rebuild was a broken oil cooler hose. Whatever as the kids say I hope you really enjoy this aquisition.Sounds like it is going to be a pretty nice car.

Well, this engine was put in used by the PO who got it from a salvaged car. The car probably was salvaged because of this bearing issue but the engine started and ran fine at idle so the problem went undetected. No way to know how long the salvaged car sat before becoming a donor so the trail is pretty cold on who did the engine work. We put in new rings and honed the existing bores and pistons. I don't remember if they are standard or not.

No recourse to me on the faulty rebuild so I spent no time researching it.

this car is now running, painted and has new michelins on 15" rims. I have had a continuing wierd squeak which has defied diagnosing. Front wheel bearings were suspected and rejected, the center u joint was suspected and rejected, too long wheel bolts suspected and rejected, rubbing on the water and dust shield on the backside of the brakes.

Yesterday I decided it must be the front wheel bearings and dove in. I found the dust shield very bent so I dug deeper to see that better. When I removed the dust cover I found the grease packed in. Upon removing the hub I found the grease had been overfilled and was squeezing out the back bearing seal. I decided to go ahead and change the bearings and seals.

I also found the little teeth which I assume to be needed for the anti lock brakes full of grease. So I cleaned that too. Would these teeth being full of grease cause the anti lock to malfunction?

The edge of the rotor did not show clear evidence of rubbing but the lip from wear was clean and shiny on its top so I decided to replace the rotors too.

After this I will install a cruise control modulator.

Next thing to tackle is the semi functioning clock.

Extremely unlikely. Those sensors are either Hall Effect or Variable Reluctor (most likely VR) and only respond to ferrous materials. The rotation of the reluctor ring increases and decreases the magnetic field between the gap and the tooth to generate a voltage change in the coil. This signal is read by the system as speed.

There should be no effect.

I replaced the lf wheel bearing, and rotor but the squeeking continues!

I am going to get under it and have a good look at the exhaust system and drive shaft(s).

I want to take it to Florida next week so I want the squeek gone!
