Anyone with a Diesel w/ Manual Shutoff?

Hey Guys,

Been trying to figure out how to manually shutoff my OM617 for a while, ie no vacuum. I know on some older models, 220D, 190D, 240D maybe some had manual shutoffs. Does anyone own one of these cars and could tell me how it works, maybe some photos? Any help is appreciated! THANKS!

Why not shut it off with vacuum? It is a pretty darn reliable way to turn it off!

Yeah, it is. But I don't want to drive the Vacuum pump. Takes up power and even more valuable space. Plus the shutoff is the ONLY thing on the truck (Unimog) that needs Vacuum. So I am exploring options.

As long as you are alive and breathing, you have vacuum. A simply vacuum hose run from the shut off into the passenger compartment will suffice. Two quick sucks and off it goes.

The easiest way would be to get some vinyl tubing, and a large syringe and cable tie it to the underside of the dash. Not sure if it would work but it would be unique.

Keep it the way it was originally engineered and you will not run into any issues.

I can't argue with your logic, however if I kept it the way it was originally engineered I wouldn't have an OM617.952 in my Unimog, I would have an M180. And you can't tell me THAT didn't cause a hell of a lot of issues.

well

if you want to go that route get an electric vacuum pump from a w126 and the vacuum reservoir for it and plumb it to the shutoff valve. Set it up so when you turn it on it allows it to start, turn key to off it gives the system vacuum and shuts the engine off.

Hey Jack,
It looks like you have opened a hornets nest!!
I have several non Mercedes diesels with manual shut off. For a 617 you could use a cable that would pull down the emergency shut off leaver. Given you have been smart enough to fit a 617 in your Unimog, I cant see it being that hard for you to do it !!
In the long term, you could install an electromagnet where the vac shut off is and work it from your ignition, you may need some sort of timer & relays so that it is power to shut off & it turns the electromagnet off after say 30 sec.

I like the cable thing. Just get a manual choke cable and run that to the stop lever linkage

How come everyone is so predisposed to pulling on a cable when sucking on a hose is just as effective and requires virtually no modification?

TheDon - I was considering mounting a small vacuum pump in my control panel (in the headliner area, so everything is weather/waterproof).

The cable route would be my first inclination, I just have to figure out routing. The shutoff serves lever serves the same function as the vacuum shutoff, it just kills the fuel supply.

Nobody will argue that is the most reliable, simplest way but....I have to draw the line SOMEWHERE.

And grabbing a knob and pulling on it is somehow less of a problem?
