1986 SDL - Compressor Clutch Replacement Question
On a recent 2500 mile road trip, the AC in my 1986 300SDL blew the #5 fuse an hour in to the journey. I could replace the fuse to keep the heat from trickling in the vents, but as soon as the compressor engaged for the AC, the fuse would blow again.
While at gerkebi's GTG in Ohio, mrelbe and Johnhef helped me with troubleshooting the problem and we were left with the possibility that the compressor clutch is bad and needs to be replaced. Is this something I should attempt myself or should I just let my trusted indie shop deal with it? Should I just have the whole compressor replaced with the clutch?

Thanks for the link. It doesn't appear to be overly difficult, but I'll see what my indie shop will charge to do it. I'd only have to buy those tools in the link plus the clutch parts to do it myself so it might be worth the effort.

BTDT. It's hell to do in the confines of a W124 without repositioning the compressor but it can be done with a collection of Harbor Freight pin pliers and a lot of foul language. MB manifold hoses don't allow that much movement of the compressor so plan on working from below. Protect the radiator fins!
In my case, there was relative movement between the compressor case and the clutch backing plate such that the alignment pin and slot wore each other. This relative movement allowed the pulley to come into contact with the clutch coil which eventually shorted the clutch. The FSM gives a spec of something like 4 ohms for the coil which you can test between pin 7 of the Klima and ground. Don't quote me on that spec! I used a $5 Harbor Freight under dash ammeter and found a compressor draw of something like 20 amps! IIRC, your SDL uses a ND 10PA15 compressor. This limits wrecking yard options to 601/2/3 and M102 compressors. M103 engines use a 10PC17C compressor with a different clutch attachment which might or might not work. W126 V8s use a V-belt pulley. I could be wrong about W201 2.6 compressors but I want to leave you something to do You can go with another marque but you'll have to swap terminal ends. Make sure you get a good pulley bearing if you go with a used clutch, or reuse yours if the inside race isn't scored like mine was from contacting the coil. I think you can swap bearings if necessary. Sixto 87 300D |

Autozone has the compressor removal tool to lend.
