KI spring replacment 1990 300d W124 - No magnet in pan ?

I am doing a K1 spring replacement in my latest MB ( 1990 W124 300D) . There was no magnet in the transmission pan . My previous W126 had a magnet . I have seen magnet or magnetic drain plug in l other ATs that I have serviced. Should I add a magnet ? What size / source( like NAPA etc ?) and where do I place it in the pan ? -Thanks

My 124.128 does not have a magnet in the pan of the transmission either (722.418). I thought about putting one on the outside of the pan but never got around to it.

Get the magnet out of an old speaker and stick it on the bottom of the pan,i dont know how much good it will do but it cant do any harm.Probably free magnet and easy to do.

Thumbs up

I have installed small ones in the trans pans of my rides. About 1"x1.5"x0.5"... you will be amazed at the amount of crap it traps.

Might sound like a newbie question. What purpose does the magnet serve?

Magnets attract metal debris from being sucked into the valve body and clogging the transmission

I added some rare earth magnets I had kicking around into the pan of mine. Thing will hold worth 50 lb of force to many things... Aluminum is not one of them....
