Diesel Purge- Worth it?
I have a 1983 300D with 286,000 miles. I was wondering if doing a diesel purge would really make a difference. I use Stanadyne in every tank, don't know if that figures into it or not. What is the best way to go about doing it? Liquid Moly? Anybody have any stories if they have done it and did you see a marked improvement?

I've done two diesel purges on my 84 300D NA in two years using diesel purge in the plastic bottle under the hood method. I noticed no difference but it did give me piece of mind. Since you have been using Stanadyne (IMO the best diesel fuel additive) in every tank you are keeping your fuel system/injectors clean. I have a '97 Powerstroke F-350 with 326K miles that has had Stanadyne in every tank since 2002. My injectors are original and are clean as a whistle. Stick with what you have been doing. Your injectors will love you forever.

I agree, I think Stanadyne is the best out there on the market. Thanks for sharing your experience of doing the purge but not really seeing a difference.

Just perfomed diesel purge (plastic bottle method) on my '83 300D last week. Valve job was done two weeks previous. Did not notice any noticeable performance improvement, nor did she produce any abnormal smoke from tailpipe. It did however turn the bronze colored liquid black when it was returned to the bottle. Not sure if that is normal, but after changing both fuel filters, she seems to be running as she previously did. By the way, the bolt on top of the primary fuel filter was a 24mm.

Did the purge once about a year ago, didn't notice any improvement in performance, but I got some black out of my injectors so they should be running cleaner now. The car felt smoother, but that's just subjective, as I feel the same with every oil change

Question , What is the " Plastic Bottle Method " ? I have done purges on my 03 Suburban where I use a vacuum line on the intake to draw some into the manifold and let it soak before a restart and driving ( Mucho Smoke).

To maximize the concentration of Diesel Purge through the IP and injectors, pour DP into a bottle and route the IP inlet line (before the small filter) and return line (after the big filter) into a clear bottle. This allows you to:
1) keep an eye on the level of DP so you shut off the engine before drawing air, and keep an eye on the wonderful colors and any sediment (hopefully none but you never know). 2) use as much DP as possible at package concentration. Without an engine load, a considerable amount of fuel drawn by the lift pump is returned to the fuel tank. Routing the return line into the bottle lets you continue to draw DP at package concentration. A glass bottle works just as well Sixto 87 300D |

At 286k you need new injectors nozzles, nothing in a bottle is going to help. I recently had them done on my SD and what a difference they made.

Thank for the info. I just happen to have purchased DP from Phil last week o I believe I will give it a shot. Along this line and not to hi jack this thread. I believe that some air is being pulled into my fuel system ( hoses soon to be replaced). With the engine at idle ( smoother now that I adjusted the rack dampener bolt) I see constant small air bubbles coming into the small clear prefilter. It might just be the clamp. However thought I would ask should I see any ? It has a little white smoke at start up and slightly rough then clears up quickly.
Thanks Alan

I use Diesel Purge and did not notice any difference other than the nailing went away. Smooth as silk now, but I think it is good that most do NOT see any difference, if they are maintaining fuel systems the way they should. If you see an improvement, it is probably because of neglect - not to be confrontational in any way. I have also used Stanadyne in Navistar 7.3 diesels. Either one works great. My local NAPA sells Liquid Moly products. I buy Diesel Purge for $5 a bottle.

Diesel purge is nothing more than expensive lantern oil and 10% very harsh solvents.
Instead of wasting money on that junk, buy a tank of B50. That will clean the entire fuel system and it won't harm your pump. |
