1983 300SD Warm Engine noise - Chain?

My car's been sitting about a year due to non-technical reasons. This is the OM617.951 Turbo engine.
On a cold start, the engine sounds nice and normal, as quiet as a Diesel can be, which is not very quiet, granted... When I stop after driving it for a while, I notice this god-awful clanging/clattering from the front of the engine, as far as I can tell it's coming from the chain casing. Sounds like a ball bearing is banging around in there.
This does not appear to affect the engine's operation, but the noise stays even if I rev it up.
If I let the engine cool down to about one quarter on the guage, I can start it up to idle and it will be quiet, then after a minute or two, here it comes gradually until it's loud again.

Firstly, does anyone have a guess as to what is doing this?

Secondly, as to exploring the innards, I've not torn down the front of this engine before, only my Volvo 240 which has a belt and so is probably less involved. I'm ready to try, but would like as much wisdom on this as possible before going in. I have the paperback MB engine manual, can any forum member here guide me with, or link me to, some real world advice about doing this, and possible gotchas, from experience? Not that the engine manual is not real world...

Thanks so much for any help!

vacuum pump?

i know they have ball bearings in them that wander into the engine when they implode....and it is at the front of the motor....i would stop driving it and check that....can't think of what a chain would make more noise when warm but i dunno

You need to have a mod move this to the diesel section or make another post over there. That section gets more traffic and those guys dont really venture over here. This is primarily the gas mercedes section

Thanks, I will do that.

BTW: Discovered this morning that the radiator fan and water pump pulley can be deflected by hand up and down about a half-inch. Now I suspect that the water pump bearing is going. Going to address that first to see if that was my noise.

Mike, recommend replacing the water pump immediately. If you seriously overheat the engine it will be toast. (Of course, then you can forget about the loud noise and junk the 300SD.) Recommend buying a reconditioned water pump from your local MB dealer.

It is the water pump. I had the same sound on my SD several years ago.

X3 for H2O pump

Your not likely to find in locally so you will have to order it. I wouldnt get it from the dealer... too expensive I am sure. Too bad your not closer... I have a known good one sitting here for the 617.

Actually a water pump for a 617 from the dealer is only in the $50-60 range. Its one of the random "reasonably priced" parts they carry.

It may be worth your while giving Phil at fastlane on this site a try for the water pump.

I had a horrible noise coming from my sd once... it turns out the crank pulley bolts had ALL let loose. Buy the time I got them replaced only ONE was actually semi holding the pulley on.

Dont forget to get the gasket too...

My Local MB Dealer quotes $130 on a recon water pump.
Fastlane is $61 incl. shipping.
Strange that there are two pumps show with identical part #s from different makers, the Geba is $53 and the Laso is $80. Don't recognize either of those brands. I may call and discuss with Phil.

I need to clean out my garage so I can do this under cover on a real floor. I always lose bolts/clips/etc if I work on the grass. Keeping the Benz off-road until then.
