My apologies for taking this post to another direction. I simply wanted to know how the EGT gauge was mounted so I can duplicate it for my car.

Thanks to all for the information that may make me a bit less concerned.

To answer a few questions:
I will post a couple of pictures of where the probe is mounted, that section of the exhaust is easy to remove to drill and tap so no worries about where the chips are going, whole job probably less than an hour.

The OM 617 may be rated to run continuous at over 1400° F, but it has an iron cylinder head, as do all the engines that I am aware of at tractor pulls.
Most drivers of large trucks that I know draw the line about 1200f even with iron head engines, and I am not speaking of an iron head engine in my car, it is aluminum.

The timing chain is new, probably about 800 miles ago and the pump is set at 15 ATDC.
I have not yet pop tested the injectors.
The engine starts good, and has a nice smooth idle, with no visible smoke at idle.

At the rate the exhaust temperature was rising, I think it would have gone higher had I kept my foot in it.

Good point on the fuel delivery at WOT being the same whether towing or not, I have a few other projects going but definitely will be doing the same sort of test run while towing the little camper in the very near future.

Iron melts much higher than aluminum. Its the pistons not the heads on the 617 that have watched. 1250 is a good safe number.

A couple of pictures for those that asked about installing the probe for the pyrometer.
1-remove this piece of the exhaust that replaced the trap-ox on these early 603 engines, easy to do if things are not too rusty, soak the fasteners with Blaster overnight if you have time.
2-Center punch the spot where you want to put the probe, drill it and tap it for 1/8"NPT.
3- put the part back on,I like to use anti-seize on the gasket surfaces and the tapered seat on the round end where there is no gasket as well as the fastener threads.
4- screw the probe in the new threaded hole you just made, how easy could it get.:D Don
