Ignition tumbler pin removal

I had the ignition lock up on me the other night in the 300SD.
After a couple of prayers and a whole lot of swearing the key turned one more time. I removed the tumbler as soon as I got home.

Went to the dealer with a copy of the title , I.D. , fingerprints and blood sample and they have a new tumbler coming keyed alike. 3 days out on delivery.

In the mean time I want to remove the pins on my current lock so, one I can drive the car and two test to see for sure if this is the problem.

I have read that many have done it but I cant figure out how to get this over built little cylinder apart.

Any suggestions ? Its no wonder that Mercedes aren't on the most stolen lists

I just took it out and used a very wide screwdriver. Not very classy, but you will be replacing it in three days. No need to put a whole lot of work into it.

If I were going to try and get into it I would focus on the tiny hole that preceeds the hold you used to remove it from the housing.

I would also drive VERY carefully for the next few days. Cops don't like approaching a vehicle with a screwdriver in the ignition.

Also, we don't need another runaway thread like VSTech's 'tank-dip' fiasco...

I have a flat file that fits the slot and disengages the steering lock it turns pretty easy and starts , but as was said cops get a little suspicious .

I just didn't want to install the new tumbler and find it was the lock bar.
This could cause a 60.00 mistake and a lot more work.

Tried aligning the pin hole but it doesn't release the inner cylinder.

There is a small roll pin but no way to remove it , maybe a one time setup ??

No guns so hopefully the thread sticks to removing the lock pins

I always removed the screwdriver...you can't tell theres not key as it's just a hole

Yeah, probably that tiny hole was just a onetime setup. Next step would be inserting your key into the tumbler and playing with the large square stop that allowed you to remove it from the housing. I'll go pull mine and play with it.

I don't think you will have any problems with cops, unless of course you leave the screwdriver/file in the hole. if you just put it in to start, then put it in the center console, it's no big deal, plus you do have the registration on the car...

It almost like trying to figure out the chain link horse shoe puzzle.

According to prior posts it has been done. Just no detail on how.
I've come to the conclusion once together that's it.

The entire locking mechanism and rod reminds me of the bank scene
in the movie Code with Morgan Freeman

Gotta love the overkill...........until it stops working of course.

Guess when I get the new one I'll find out for sure which is bad.

I don't think it can be disassembled, but it can be broken. Maybe this thread will help: W124 Lock Cylinder Replacement: How-to

Mine came that way. The PO broke the bottom part of the tumbler, slid it apart and removed the pins/tumblers, then slid it back together. It worked to turn over the ignition with anything flat. Because it was broken and just stuck together, it eventually failed again.

But...he also pried off the back of the ignition switch, jammed a wood-screw into the steering column lock so it wouldn't slide to engage and put it all back to together with a hoseclamp.

Having the steering column lock function correctly is quite useful in removing/installing the steering wheel.

Well new dealer coded tumbler with new key installed all worked smooth........................For a day.

Seems the problem is in the steering lock. Going to remove it while it still lets me. To think it "only" lasted 29 years

Thanks for the input on the tumbler guys.
