Just back from another weekend business trip. Drove our W210 and had an easy, relaxing journey. Calculated nearly 32 mpg highway.

Concern:
Upon departure, when I initiated the starting sequence, nothing happened. I tried several times and moved the shift lever from Park to neutral as well. Eventually the starting sequence activated and the motor started. I created a thread to this effect and have since not had a repeat of this situation.

Question:
What is the most reasonable option for DIY OBD interrogation platform? Something beyond just reading and clearing codes, although for the short term that may also help, I am looking for an option that will allow viewing live AND stored data.

By DIY do you mean home-built? You'll probably need a digital electronics forum for that. If you mean something you can buy and install yourself, I like the ScanGauge II, which I've had on the '96 E300D for several years. It can view a variety of data from the engine management system and is typically used to keep an eye on fuel consumption, battery voltage, etc. It can also read and clear codes. ScanGauge is available from a number of on-line vendors; sorry I don't remember where I bought mine. About $150.

No. That would be silly. I guess I wasn't clear. I mean affordable for the DIY'er rather than the 3-10K$ option.

That is the suggestion I am looking for. I dont need something permanently installed, a handheld or something laptop based is fine too.

I have both a Scanguage II and Autoenginuity. AE was about $500 for the whole package and I have yet to be satisfied with the data it provides for the W210. I haven't kept up my subscription because I was disgusted with it but they may have fixed the problems now.

I bought it about a year and a half ago.

Still liking mine at 280,000 miles. Hoping to get the 500,000 km (320,000 miles) badge before I have to decide on another car. I'm not sure my next will be a diesel. At $3.00 for regular and $3.65 for diesel the savings are minimal if at all. If in Europe it would be a no brainer.

Look at a base jetta vs a Jetta TDI and I just don't see the payback.

I've had the normal problems: window regulator, sunroof grease and retainer fix, fuel line replace, brake switch replace, and the passenger seat sensor replace. I've done them all. Also had a real mechanic do the glow plugs and timing chain. He broke one glow plug off and I know he worked a while to get it out.

The car is still solid, paid for and only worth $6,000 (maybe). Maybe I run it till the wheels fall off at this point. I have a 14 year old, I'm sure he'll be rough on whatever he drives.

41.7mpg (imperial 4.56 ltrs) 1996 e300d

Have recently purchased a 1996 w210 e300 diesel after my previous 1996 w210 250 diesel was written off following an accident. Filled up when low fuel light came on, the car took about 16.2ltrs (13.7 imperial gallons) on which I had driven 571.5 imperial miles. This works out at 41.7 imperial miles per gallon.
Most of the driving has been on my 19.1 mile each leg commute to work - which is 90% highway 10% town. I have been keeping the car in top gear 4th between 45 and 60 mph at as close to 2000 rpm as possible. In town I have coasted to junctions and always tried to avoid using brakes.
I think in top gear 50mph - ish at 200rpm this is an incredibly efficient car once the engine is warmed up.

First of all- there is only one mile used on land in modern times (equal to 5280 ft )

Not bad fuel economy. Do you not have the overdrive (5th gear)? Seems like you could do even better using that.

The best I've seen is 41 mpIMPg doing mostly highway (around 70mph)

41.7mpg

The car has the 4 speed auto box, the one before the electronic 5 speed was introduced. Achieve milage by keeping car as close to 2000 revs as possible, this tends to be at about 50mph on level ground, plus or minus on a slope. In the Uk our single lane high speed roads have a limit of 60mph - the road I take to work is also very windy so keeping a near constant speed helps with not having to decelerate too much for corners. I don't use cruise control.

Mine is still running great.

This year I replaced glow plugs, glow plug relay.

Next I'm doing:
Xenon headlight ballast (replaced the other side a couple of years ago)
4 Bilstein HD shocks (current ones have 80K miles)
Oil Change, every 16-18K
Air Filter
Cabin air filters (got these from Phil, looks like very high quality!)

Running Bridgestone Eucopia tires with lifetime alignment from Firestone. Great deal and great tires. I commute 100 miles per day to/from work, so I'm loving my Diesel.....getting around 31 miles per gallon with some city driving mixed in.

I love my W210, but it is for sale now, since I recently bought two W123s!

I've had two, and one 124. I like the more "go-kart" handling feel of the 124, but almost everything else about the 210. Averaging 31.5 mpg combined. This one has the best 606 motor thats been in my posession, but I now have two "hanging" GPs that wont wigglle out.

Once I extract those, it's the water pump (,leak) and timing pump (235K is close enough), and I hope to have another 40-50K of trouble free operation.

Of all the Diesels I have had, I liked the 210 (1998) the best. I only had it for a little over a year, but enjoyed every mile. I fell asleep behind the wheel and drove off into a sand wash. I thank God I was not injured, and even drove the car home (after a $150 tow out of the sand). It was damaged more than I thought ($6,500 estimate), so I bought it back from the insurance co. and fixed it myself with the $4,800 I got. $1,000 in parts and a month later, it was on the road again. A friend of mine made me an offer I could not refuse, and sold it. He is still driving it and enjoys it as well.

Despite a couple nasty repairs (water pump and belt tensioner) I like mine. I'm averaging 28mpg which I hope to boost. This is in city driving with some mixed freeway I like mine. At 292k she runs like new.
