1st comp was remanned 2nd was new. Probably not a bad lot. I'm going to replace the TX valve, r/d, orings, flush and refill with exactly the correct prescribed everything the next time I go see vstech.

I'm going to get my money back from advance as well.

Will you be re-imbursed by Advance for the lost R12 and labor? Maybe you should leave the R134 in since it is blowing cold and see how long it lasts?

300SD R12 capacity?

Can anyone confirm these numbers? 6oz of mineral oil and 2.9 of r12.

Funola,
I have considered that. It should be sweltering tomorrow, I'll see how the 134 does. On the other hand, I never turn down an opportunity to get under my cars skirt.

we are in the process of the first repair claim. I'll just add this to the list.

Is that a R134 TXV? If Yak's theory is true, you should state you refilled with R134 in the claim. But then you'll be lieing.

the next txvalve will be an r12 valve. I have no idea what is on there now. the bottom of the harrison comp says r12

I wouldn't say a theory. An idea, maybe, that could help explain how a system that runs okay on 134 could have two compressors blow out with what looks like a liquid slug symptom.

In order to get a warranty on the compressor, it's usually required that a new TXV and dryer be purchased at the same time. Was that not the case?

I don't think you can buy anything but a 134txv anymore... and the pressures at the txv for 134 and 12 are only off by 4psi... not a hill of beans difference, except it will make the 12 system a tad warmer.
another thing I thought of, thayer said BOTH compressors that blew failed after a cold start of the car within minutes of getting on the road... it's gotta be a defective txv flowing too much refrigerant after a long drive, filling the suction and evap with excessive liquid refrigerant then parking and allowing the liquid to settle and mix with the oil filling the crankcase what little there is...
nothing is getting taken for granted with thenext rebuild. EVERYTHING is getting replaced, and flushed.

It may not be applicable to the OP or this thread but I have a NOS Harrison GM compressor available for sale. The only potential issue is the compressor is marked SAE, I assume that that marking simply refers to the threaded mounting holes and the hose manifold connections. The label is marked S.A.E. J639, Model 1131627, Refrig. Oil 177 ml (6.0 fl.oz.) Code 1X2901 the X is unreadable If anyone is interested feel free to PM me. Good Luck!

Can't answer much there, but I'll try, that's the way it came out of the old box it was in, that is an O-ring don't know why it's there, I got it with a bunch of old parts from a shop that was closed for a few years, the owner told me he had bought it for a customer and ended up never installing it.

That o-ring is on both of my GM Delco R4's. The only thing I can think of that it's used for is strain relief for the compressor clutch harness.

all the compressors I've gotten from dealers have been sealed with a plate over the line openings. yours has the orings in the body, but no plate to seal out moisture. it looks like oil is in there, does the clutch turn easy or stiff or not at all?

My SD and SDL both indicate 2.9lbs of r12.

Truth be known, the R134 in my system blows pretty darn cold. Now when it is above about 95 degrees outside and the car has been sitting a while, it takes a little while to cool down, but that is not abnormal, especially in older European cars. After about 5 to 10 minutes on the road, it is pretty comfortable. Kind of weird here, but I can tolerate no a/c in the house, and at work, but in a car I have to have it. First thing I do when I get home it to turn the a/c up, after the wife has been running it all day. I do like to save on electricity, especially when I can use the money for more car parts!
