My clutch died, then revived ... wth?!
Hi guys, I ran across a weird one two days ago while 300 miles from home. My stepdad took my '79 240d to go get something and when he came back, he went to throw out the clutch and the pedal dropped to the floor. Stayed on the floor, too. He just turned off the key and let it lurch to a stop. Then, a couple seconds later, he poked around with his foot and the pedal came back to life. I've since driven it all the way home and through a huge traffic jam and there has been no sign of any problem.
I can't figure out how the clutch works, it's obviously hydraulic but I see no cylinders on it anywhere. That makes me nervous, worried that they're internal to the tranny ... ? Anybody have any theories?

Hey Finn, there is a master and slave cylinder for the clutch. The slave is on the outside of transmission, and the master is on the clutch petal. If I remember correctly there is a return spring as well. The spring might have gotten stuck some how.

Bad clutch master cylinder up under the dash. Nothing internal to the transmission. Not unusual for one to fail and then revive before failing completely. I'd get a spare or a rebuild kit and get it done.

X2 - I'm with Kerry on this one. I would suggest replace the master and slave at the same time. Bleeding the system after replacement can be fun, but there is plenty of info on here regarding bleeding clutch hydraulics. Good Luck!
