Can anyone help identify these electrical components? ('71 220D)
Alright, I'm STILL waiting for that Haynes to arrive, so in the meantime, I am guessing at what's what under the hood of my new (to me) 220D project. I am doing pretty well with most of the doo-dads under there, but one has got me stumped... there's a box with four connections underneath mounted on the firewall (in the engine bay) on the passenger's side. It's near the a/c condenser, and it's bracket is mounted to the firewall by two small diameter bolts.
ANother box that has me guessing is the one mounted on the passenger side inner fender of the engine bay; it looks like a lighting relay, perhaps, and has a three-contact connector (plastic male/female ends) that runs into the wiring harness. This car is a 71 220D, if that helps... built 11/70, I believe. Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am making slow progress on this car, but it's been very rewarding to see little things start working, one by one. The blower, lights, etc... all work now. I can't wait to get the starter to crank over, and then the glow plugs to glow! Thanks again for any guidance (or guesses!) you may be able to provide!!! Chris cscmc1@eiu.edu |

On your first doo dad I think if you remove the top of the box you'll find two fuses. If I remember they are for the lighting circuit.
The second one doesn't bring anything to mind.

Chris:
I see you couldn't resist! The first little box on the firewall is the fuse set for the AC compressor -- should be a relay there, too, underneath. The other box, mounted to the inner fender, is the voltage regulator. I have a spare if you need it, replaced mine ($60), turned out to be the alternator. Spare rebuildable alternator, too (doesn't work, needs at least diodes). Have you got it started? I am looking at a replacement short block tomorrow or next Friday (depending on when I get to Macon, Ga!) -- if it is cheap enough, replacement time for the 72! Have fun -- these cars are a blast! Peter

Couldn't resist...
Hi Peter -- thanks for the help. No, I couldn't resist... just piddling with the wiring and such has already made the investment worthwhile. It's been a blast! No, I have not gotten the car started yet, but I have not even touched it in over a week now (busy with Christmas stuff; you know how it is).
I will probably spend some time tinkering on it this weekend. I hope so, anyway! Thanks again, Chris |
