Engine rebuild price?

What's a reasonable price to have an engine rebuilt? 85 300D Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to do this.

Why the rebuild?

For baseline pricing check http://www.mercedesengines.net Hint: Make certain you are sitting down first...

My advice to you, start parting out heavily.

:)

But seriously, unless you can do the work yourself, or the car body is in collector-quality shape, you can buy a very nice replacement car for what it would cost.

0 psi in #1 on compression check. The tech that looked at it said it could be a stuck valve but more likely a hole in a piston with the amount of oil it's burning. I'm trying to decide what I should do with it, rebuild or junk it, the rest of the car is in great shape.

At 143K??? What did you do wrong?

Is getting a second hand motor from a scrapyard an option where you are?

Based on how many cylinders are bad (whether they need to be re-sleeved with new pistons or not) and if you do the work yourself you will spend between $1500 and $2500. I am about 40% through the rebuild of a 250D engine and will probably end up with between $1200 and $1500 in it when I get everything running. Looks like the cost to get the block right is going to be approximately $190/cyl (new pistons, rings, sleeves, and labor for replacement of sleeves). Crank brgs ran about $100 which is not included in this cost. I ended up purchasing a used engine just to get the cylinder head (used engine cost $150 and one days worth of drive time). Cylinder head will probably come in at around $300. It required four exhaust guides and one intake valve in addition to all new seals. Other miscellaneous parts are going to add another couple/few hundred to the cost of the job.
PS - don't say anything to the wife about what it costs ;).

Wasuchi:

Go to www.remanufactured.com and you will find a M-B turbo diesel long block rebuilt engine for $2990 with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty for non-commercial use. Also, $600 core charge plus $175 S&H to most states. I've have no info on how good their engines are, but it is worth a phone call to find out. Perhaps another member has experience with these folks.

Another source for rebuilt and used M-B engines is Adsit (www.adsitco.com). A rebuilt long block 300D turbo engine sells for $4495 plus $800 core plus S&H. A used engine with a 30 day warranty sells for $1,950 plus $800 core plus S&H. Same with remanufactured - I do not know how good Adsit engines are.

Good Luck!:D!
