Where to check for fuel leaks?

Hi all,

I seem to be having a problem with fuel leaking

If the fuel gauge is working correctly I am using a huge amount of fuel, no where near the 25-30 miles per gallon.

So far I have replaced a fuel line to the #5 Injector the looped line.
There was an obvious leak there, looked like the original cloth covered fuel line
I tried first with nappa fuel line 3.2 was not able to get the line pushed down tight and used weed wacker fuel line instead
I dont see any more fuel leaking there...

The cigar hose looks dry, the other injector lines look dry, the small clear plastic fuel filter is dry. The big fuel filter is dry too
Where else do I need to check for fuel leaks?? I can still smell diesel.
I have looked under the car while it is running and dont see any obvious leaks.
GIRL TERMS/pictures/diagrams would be a great help...... I have searched and have not come across a complete fuel system diagram
thanks all

You're going to smell diesel for a while even after the leaks are gone, give it some time. You may want to replace the rest of those jumper lines too.

One pics is in this thread: Engine Bay Pics post #6.

Another is below.

What type of mileage are you getting? What kind of car?

As far as the cloth return lines that stuff is very cheap from dealer. Get about 3 feet of it and do all the lines. After that use dawn dish washing detergent to wash engine down. It is cheap and works well to break down fuel and grease.

Follow fuel lines from tank to front the whole length. Look for dark spots, Especially around any clips that hold lines to the body.

Good Luck.

I will replace the other looped lines with the right stuff...the weed wacker line seems too flimsy to be able to stand the heat of the engine

Is that a diagram of the whole fuel system?

The amount of fuel I am using it seems there should be a huge leak somewhere. Or maybe the gauge is wacko?? The trip odometer is working off and on. Not sure if the fuel gauge and trip odo are related

I have so many other leaks it is hard to pinpoint just where the road spots are coming from. I replaced the power steering return line today also...so maybe that will at least stop that leak

I know the gauges can be unreliable but just a 8-10 mile trip is using about 1/8 of a tank

I have also checked the clear fuel lines that have the banjo bolts...they are dry as well, discolored but dry

The fuel gauges can be wacky, and its usually due to the fuel level sender in the tank. You might try pulling it out and cleaning it. It's a simple job. You'll find the sending unit under the first-aid box. Sometimes the gauges can jump up and down more than a 1/4 tank in one flicker, so take it with a grain of salt. Also if your trip and odometer aren't turning all the time your milage is going to read too low. Do some searching here on fixing the odometer. The gears in the odometer usually start slipping on the shafts and then the numbers don't turn. For you to use 1/8th of a tank in 8-10 miles you'd see leaking fuel somewhere in large quantities. I bet your wacky gauge and ill-functioning odometer are causing the low milage.

For the most part, missing is the metal "rack" that goes from the Injection Pump to the injectors themselves.
You may want to clean the engine as best you can and then try to determine where any leaks are coming from.
If you're going through that much fuel, your biggest leak should be obvious, or as mentioned, a faulty gauge.

If the little Nipples on the Injectors are bent inwards towards the Injector Body it is difficult to get the standard Fuel Return Line onto the Nipples.

Leave about 1/2 inch of the Fuel Return Line/Hose sticking out and gently grip above that with a Pliers and use that to push on the Lines.

Thanks for all the great feedback, this forum and members are awsome!
My car would not be running if it were not for all you guys!

Just as I suspected, the weed wacker line is now leaking, flimsy stuff....

I will have to try again with the nappa line. I will try the trick with the needle nose.
Thanks for the tips... on to the fuel sender and trip odo
Boy this car really keeps me busy!!!

I think I managed to stop the fuel leak.
The nappa line is what I used again.
I had to cut the line on a slight angle.
It seemed to do the trick along with the needle nose....

Too much rain today to be able to get under
the car to check the fuel tank. Hopefully the looped line is all that was leaking
And too dang hot to sit inside with the windows up
to try to get to the sender.
looks like next weekend is planned already
One of these days I will get my air and mb tex installed....
