If the car was full of oil 1/2 tank of fuel ago,

and the oil leaked fast enough to run out of oil in this time due to a cut oil-cooler hose,

don't y'all think that it would still be pissing oil?

Doesn't sound like the culprit.

Also, the turbo return? If there were enough backpressure (crankcase pressure) from bad rings / other, seems possible that it could dump oil from somewhere under high boost / high RPM operation, but at any speed the oil will be abundant enough on the bottom/rear of the car to be dripping when it stops.

where could it have gone from?

I was also going to guess the drain plug had damaged threads and popped out since thats happened to me, but he since replaced the oil, so the plug must be fine.

He would have noticed the oil cooler rubber part being cut since he's been in there after the problem, my next guess would be a hard section of the oil cooler line may be broken or cut under the bracket that holds it down near the lift pump.

It would make more sense that it would be in some way related to the oil cooler, as if the PO drove it puttering here and there, the thermostat on the oil filter housing may not have opened all that often during his use, preventing something like this from happening.

Is there oil under the car?

Post back when you find out from where! this is perplexing

I too lost the motor on a 75 300D when the oil cooler line blew up on the highway. It really sucked and I know exactly how you feel. I think this is like a rite of passage for a diesel owner or something.

At least loosen each injector hard line one at a time. This should locate the cylinder. If number one or two you might get new rod bearings in there if the crank is not tore up. Not much to lose by checking. Also look for extruded bearing matreial inside after removal of the bottom oil pan if you get that far. Cylinders one and two are the only rods you can get too with the engine installed.
